State intervention and drought in Northeast Brazil

ABSTRACT

The vast region of the Brazilian Northeast has a significant proportion of its territory subject to severe droughts. This paper provides an analysis of the government’s response to the great droughts the region underwent since the imperial period in the nineteenth century.
