FEW Nexus (food-energy-water nexus) in family farming: a case study at RedeCoop/RS

Abstract:

The objective of the present study was to analyze RedeCoop's actions in participating cooperatives through the FEW Nexus approach (food-energy-water nexus). For this, it was considered a qualitative research and the research method was the case study. Additionally, the method of analysis chosen was content analysis with pre-analytical categories. Data collection took place through interviews with the managers of the cooperatives, and documents such as minutes, public calls and posts on social networks. Throughout the analysis of the results, food, energy and water security and family agricultural production were analyzed within the scope of the cooperatives participating in RedeCoop. The results indicate that the RedeCoop has direct and indirect actions regarding the elements of the food-energy-water nexus. It acts positively in the participating cooperatives, directly, in the elements of food and energy; and still acts indirectly with respect to the water element. In the conclusions, possible actions were presented that can strengthen the performance of RedeCoop in the FEW Nexus elements. The present research showed that the discussion of FEW Nexus can help sustainable family farming. In addition, the study has the capacity to contribute to elaboration of public policies that help the production of food by family farmers.
