Congenital syphilis in the state of Rio Grande do Norte:

OBJECTIVE:

to describe the occurrence and profile of reported congenital syphilis cases in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, 2007-2010.

METHODS:

this is a descriptive study using data from the Live Births Information System and the Notifiable Diseases Information System.

RESULTS:

598 congenital syphilis cases were reported in the period studied. The incidence rate was 2.7 per 1,000 live births in 2007 and 0.9 in 2010. 74.6% of notifications were concentrated in the city of Natal. Most notifications related to those with maternal schooling of up to 8 years (65.0%), those who had had an antenatal examination (72.2%) and those diagnosed at the time of delivery/curettage (41.0%).

CONCLUSION:

despite the decrease in the incidence rate in the period investigated, in 2010 the rate was still higher than the 0.5 per 1,000 live births target for elimination of the disease.
