Implementation of the nursing process in Portuguese hospitals

Abstract

OBJECTIVE

To obtain a description of the implementation of the nursing process by nurses who work in hospitals.

METHODS

Qualitative, descriptive study that was carried out in 19 hospitals in Continental Portugal with 56 nurses. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview.

RESULTS

Content analysis originated the categories nursing process, initial evaluation, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and final evaluation. Although there has been a progressive appropriation of the nursing process in the past years, the description of nurses’ practices evinces some weaknesses.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study show that the application of the nursing process requires more clarification and comprehensiveness of the contents included in its stages.
