Uncovering care for patients in the death/dying process and their families

Abstract

OBJECTIVE

To understand, in terms of complexity, the conditions that influence the interactions of health professionals in the face of death and dying of hospitalized adult patients and their families.

METHOD

Theoretical and methodological references have been adopted, respectively, were the Complex Thought and Grounded Theory. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews between May 2015 and January 2016, with three sample groups: nurses, nursing technicians and members of the multidisciplinary team. The data analysis followed the steps of open, axial and selective coding.

RESULTS

The category "Uncovering the care of patients in the process of death/dying and their families" and their respective subcategories present the complex interrelation of health professionals in the face of death and dying of patients.

CONCLUSION

Causal conditions highlight the multiple connections established for care in the dialogic process of death/dying and reveal the complexity of lifeless care.
