Open-access Violence against women: an analysis of the knowledge and training of dental professionals with proposals for integration into education

ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the knowledge and training of dental students and professionals regarding violence against women, identifying gaps and proposing advances to integrate this issue into dental education programs. A scoping review was conducted, following the methodological guidelines of the Joanna Briggs Institute and the PRISMA-ScR recommendations. The databases consulted included PubMed, BVS Portal, Scopus, and Epistemonikos, using descriptors related to violence against women and dental education. The inclusion criteria focused on studies addressing the intersection between dental training and gender-based violence. Of the 66 studies initially identified, 14 were selected for analysis. The results indicate that most dental surgeons and students have little knowledge about identifying and reporting cases of violence, with significant gaps in the academic curriculum. The review suggests the need to implement specific educational modules on the topic, as well as continued training to better equip oral health professionals to effectively detect and manage situations of violence. This study contributes to the debate on the importance of more comprehensive dental education and proposes ways to integrate the topic into curricula, aiming to improve professional practice and the protection of women.
