AN INTELLECTUAL IN THE SIGHTS OF REPRESSION: MILTON SANTOS AND THE COUP OF 1964

Abstract

This paper analyzes the political repression experienced by Milton Santos in consequence from the coup d’état of March 31, 1964 that overthrew the president João Goulart. The main issue focuses on understanding the imprisonment and exile of the geographer and what such facts represented in his history. The text is grounded on journalistic, military and interview sources, and takes the ideas of Jean François Sirinelli and Michel Pollack as theoretical references. I hope I can contribute to elucidate aspects of Milton Santos’s political and intellectual life, which are still little investigated, emphasizing that the 1964 coup represented a turning point for Brazilian intellectuals who were attuned to progressive ideals and struggled for a more equalitarian society.
