“A GREY LACK OF HOPE HOVERS OVER US”: AN ANALYSIS OF WOMEN AND MEN LETTERS WITH THE INTENTION TO EMIGRATE FROM GERMANY TO BRAZIL (1946-1950)

Abstract

This article is based on letters sent from Germany between 1946 and 1950 to the town hall of Blumenau - SC, Brazil, in which the senders ask for information, help and intermediation in order to immigrate. I discuss here the meanings and functions of letters in migratory projects, the imaginary, perceptions and reasons that found the expressed will to emigrate and how this operates in the autobiographical narrative elaboration. I also analyze the relations that senders establish between their “space of experience” in Germany and the “horizon of expectation”.
