LUIZ CRULS, PROFESSOR AT THE MILITARY SCHOOL: GEODESY AND ASTRONOMY IN THE BRAZILIAN 19TH CENTURY

Abstract

By dwelling on the Luiz Cruls’s geodetic teaching career at the Military School, in 1899, this text contributes to the understanding of the relationship between astronomy and debates on the First Republic national map. Starting from the students’ notebooks, it was possible to access the discussions about the preparation of the first national map, following the scientific parameters of the time, the role of the National Observatory in this process and its relation with the Army. Another important point was to advance the understanding of scientific instruments and their impact on the expeditious geodesy. In the history of astronomy little attention has been given to its application in cartographic works and lifting. We start from the premise that by investing in this line of research provide materiality to the binomial science and culture, in the sense that science was the one that defined the boundaries of something fundamental in the Brazilian nationality, or their territory.
