FRANCISCO ANTÓNIO DE SAMPAIO AND HIS NATURAL HISTORY OF VILA DA CACHOEIRA: CIRCULATION, RECONFIGURATION AND VALIDATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 18TH CENTURY

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to understand the processes building the knowledge on the nature of Brazil in the 18th century from the case study on Francisco António de Sampaio and his work on natural philosophy. My aim is to understand such processes as resulting from dynamics of the circulation of knowledge, exchanges and negotiations, and the establishment of power relations among the players involved in this process. I intend to show how these elements were fundamental to the development of scientific works in colonial conditions, as well as to its circulation and recognition by metropolitan literate circles.
