ON SUCH WIDE COASTS: THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE AND THE GROWTH OF THE ECONOMIES IN BRAZIL (C. 1831-C. 1850)

Abstract

The slave merchants use several strategies after 1831 so that the transatlantic traffic could continue, among them the creation of new ports to unload the captives. This rerouting caused changes in the areas where the slaves began to be received, especially through the supply of labor and capital from slave trade. In this paper, we discuss the growth of the regional economies in the provinces of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and Bahia during the period of the illegal transatlantic traffic between the 1830s and 1850s. We aim to show that there was a close relation between these growth processes and the unlawful traffic.
