This article discusses the discursive relationship built between two historiographical books: the História geral do Brasil, by Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen, and also the História da colonização portuguesa no Brasil, a collective enterprise that looked to spread a better idea about the colonization process of Portuguese America. The hypothesis is that we can find a common discursive substrate registered on those books especially related to the Portuguese-Brazilian colonial past with theoretical and epistemological implications by this phenomenon occurred on their footnotes.
