From local to global: written cities in Luiz Bacellar and Astrid Cabral

ABSTRACT

The present essay discusses the presence of cities in the poetry of Luiz Bacellar and Astrid Cabral. An attentive analysis is attempted of poems from Frauta de barro (1963) and Ponto de cruz (1979), in order to extract affinities and distinctions between the works of the two authors. The process of analysis is divided into two parts: at first, the topos is established within some examples of the history of poetry; subsequently, the focus of attention turns to the fundamental images of each poem. At the end, a comparative approach aims to dismantle some stereotypical exoticism associated with the common imaginary surrounding other cities from - what is commonly accepted as - Amazonian authors. Thus, these two authors, Bacellar and Cabral, shine a light on other forms of relationship between poetry and urban experience.
