ABSTRACT
Critical review of the work “Modernidade em preto e branco: arte e imagem, raça e identidade no Brasil, 1890-1945”, by Rafael Cardoso, published by Companhia das Letras in 2022. The main objectives of the book, the sources used, and theses defended are presented, inserting author and work in the historiographical debates. In the review, special attention is devoted to the notions of modernity and modernism developed by Cardoso.
