“Terzo Mondo” in trance: Antonio Candido in Genoa and later

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present article is to discuss the relationship between the participation of Antonio Candido in congress “Terzo Mondo and Comunità Mondiale” (Italy, 1965) and the theoretical-conceptual change of his work from the second half of the 1960s, especially in the essay “Literatura de dois gumes” (1966). This event was pivotal in the articulation of the third world nations of that context because it counted with the presence of important intellectuals from Africa and Latin America and for the essay of a post-colonial critique of Eurocentrism. Our hypothesis is that, in the following years, Candido incorporates part of the discussions held at the meeting into his readings, starting from a reformulation of some of his analytical categories and theoretical-conceptual perspectives and from the expansion of the scope of analysis from Brazil to Latin America.
