ABSTRACT
The article contrasts the little studied novel Pureza, by José Lins do Rego, published in 1937, with its practically unknown film adaptation three years later by Cinedia, under the direction of the Portuguese Chianca de Garcia. It aims to illuminate some central aspects of the cultural politics of the Estado Novo, in particular the transition from literary regionalism to new ideals of nationalism proposed in the Vargas era.
