ERNST, Joachim F. & SCHMIDT, Axel – Dimorphism in human pathogenic and apathogenic yeasts. Basel, Karger, 2000. 246p. ilus. ISBN 3-8055-6986-6 . (Contributions to Microbiology, v. 5 – ISSN 1420-9519).

The importance of yeast pathogens causing life-threatening systemic and tenacious superficial infections in humans has been steadily increasing over the last few decades. Species of the genus Candida, as well as dimorphic fungi with a pathogenic yeast phase such as Histoplasma and Cryptococcus species cause systemic mycosis mainly in immunocompromised patients and following long-term therapy with broad-spectrum antibiotics and/or antifungals. In recent years, our knowledge of the molecular biology of yeast pathogens has increased dramatically and is beginning to affect diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. A wealth of new information has appeared on the key virulence factors of yeast pathogens, including dimorphism, which is one of the striking features of most yeast pathogens.

Written by international experts in the field, this book introduces yeast pathogens with a comprehensive guideline on yeast systematics and taxonomy. Furthermore, current therapies of yeast infections are discussed. A special focus is devoted to the most recent findings on dimorphism in yeast. Chapters on dimorphism in Candida albicans, other important yeast pathogens as well as nonpathogenic yeasts stress similarities and differences in morphogenetic processes between yeast species. Both clinicians and basic research scientists will benefit greatly from the well-edited and up-to-date information collected in this volume.

IKEDA, Y.; HATA, J.; KOYASU, S.; KAWAKAMI, Y. & HATTORI, Y., ed. – Cell therapy. Tokyo, Springer Verlag, 2000. 240p. ilus. (Keio University Symposia for Life Science and Medicine, v. 5). ISBN 4-431-70253-9

Modern cell biology has brought improvements in therapy for advanced malignant diseases through immunomodulation, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and other advanced techniques. Collected here are selected papers from the Fifth Keio University International Symposium for life Sciences and Medicine on Cell Therapy. All chapters include innovative basic research for clinical application: immunotherapy, cancer vaccination, molecular biology of hematopoietic stem cells, stem cell processing, and gene therapy. The book is in three parts: Immunotherapy for malignant diseases, Hematopoietic stem cell biology and clinical application, and International collaboration in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Included in the third part is information on bone marrow registries from around the world. The book thus presents up-to-date information on biological and clinical aspects of treatment, with insight into the future of cell therapy.
