Viruses that affect the immune system

BOOK REVIEW LIVROS

FAN, Hung Y.; CHEN, Irvin S.Y.; ROSENBERG, N. & SUGDEN, William, ed. - Viruses that affect the immune system. Washington, D.C., American Society for Microbiology, 1991. 249p. illust. ISBN: 1-55581-032-2.

This volume contains papers presented at the 1990 ICN - UCI International Conference on Virology, held in Newport Beach, California. As the authors say on foreword, a number of human and animal viruses can lyse particular subsets of immune cells, alter their normal functions, or induce malignant transformation. Many of these viruses are retroviruses or herpesviruses, and they can cause abnormalities of the immune system as autoimmunity (e.g., polyomavirus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus), lymphoid or myeloid malignancies (e.g., retroviruses and Epstein-Barr virus), or immunodeficiencies (e.g., retroviruses and cytomegalovirus). The book covers these subjects in a very comprehensive way and is divided in 4 sections, including: I. AUTOIMMUNITY induced by viruses. II. IMMUNODEFICIENCY caused by retroviruses, including topics as: the role of regulatory genes in HIV; the HIV-1/CD4 interaction; CD4 and HIV-1 Protein gP 120; HIN entry into cells, and the murine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome induced by the Duplan strain retroviruses, and IV. ONCOGENESIS caused by herpesviruses.

This book is characterized by a clarity of presentation and is recommended to students, posgraduates, and practitioners who wish to be brought up to date on the subject.
