The goal of this quasi-experimental study was to measure the impact of a health promotion program on the knowledge of the type 2 diabetic population in Querétaro, Mexico about diabetes mellitus type 2. A nursing intervention was carried out with 40 patients, who accepted to participate in the study through informed consent. In order to determine the knowledge the patients attained on the disease, each patient answered a questionnaire before and after the nursing intervention. In data analysis, percentage and absolute figures were used for measuring the qualitative variables, and chi² with alpha=0.05 was used for the significance test. After the intervention, the percentage of patients with knowledge about the illness increased from 10% to 72.5%. The nursing program contributed to the improvement of knowledge on diabetes mellitus.
