Diagnosis in child psychiatry depends on both the theoretical underpinnings of this specialty and the way in which such diagnoses are carried out. These aspects deserve close attention because diagnoses have consequences for the therapeutic plan that is drawn up, for related research, and for the measures proposed for the child’s health. They even affect the patient’s life in general and that of his/her family. This article deals with some of D. W. Winnicott´s contributions and suggests further discussion on the topic.
