Effects of coarse aggregates shape and modulus of elasticity, mix design parameters and their interactions on concrete modulus of elasticity

ABSTRACT

This study evaluated the influence of different variables (paste content, w/c ratio, shape and modulus of elasticity of coarse aggregate) and their interactions on the static modulus of elasticity of Portland cement concrete. Three slurry contents (24.7%, 19.8% and 16.5%) were fixed, three water/cement ratios (0.38, 0.48 and 0.58), the elastic modulus of the four selected rocks (basalt, diabase, limestone and granite), for basalt and diabase, three forms of coarse aggregate were used (with processing, intermediate and without processing), and for limestone and granite only one form (without processing). After the selection and study of the different materials used for the production of concrete, different mixtures were produced to evaluate the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity, both measured at 28 days of concrete age. The interactions between the variables influenced the modulus of elasticity of the concrete, but the variable paste content, first order, had the greatest impact in all situations analyzed. Therefore, the results confirmed that all the evaluated variables and their interactions have a significant influence on the concrete's modulus of elasticity.
