Red mud: an environmental problem in alumina industry

The red mud is a residue of the industry of aluminum mining. It is generated from the refining of bauxite for alumina production (Al2O3) by the Bayer process. This work presents a literature review on the production of the red mud, its characteristics, methods of final disposal, environmental problems from an inadequate disposal and alternative applications for its economic utilization.
