Influence of limestone fillers in heavy metals solidification/stabilization

Portland cement plays an ever more important role in the management of hazardous industrials wastes. Cement - based solidification/stabilization (S/S) technique has been effectively demonstrated as a treatment to isolate hazardous waste especially heavy metals. In the presents work will be discuss the effect that limestone filler addition to portland cement produced in the S/S of metals as chromium, cadmium and lead. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, calorimetric and leaching test were carried out to evaluate the level of immobilization in mortars made containing these elements. It was found that the degree of Cd, Cr and Pb ion immobilization was very high but modifies the rate and the components obtains during the cement hydration. The results thus presented prove that limestone blended cements material can be successfully used as a heavy metals immobilizing agent rather than the normal portland cement.
