Study of the thermomechanical behavior of AISI 430 stainless steel through infrared thermography

ABSTRACT

This study aims to correlate the temperature increase induced by the strain rate of AISI 430 stainless steel sheets during the tensile test and considering the following strain rates: 0.001; 0.01 and 0.1 s-1. In order to record the evolution of the temperature until the fracture of the specimens, an infrared thermographic camera was used. The results of infrared thermography showed a gradual and uniform increase in temperature during the work hardening of the material and a drastic temperature elevation in the regions of localized necking and fracture of the specimens. For the deformation rate of 0.1 s-1 the highest temperature gradient between localized necking and fracture was observed (110 ºC).
