Dendrological key and characterization of the vegetative morphology of the Lauraceae family in a fragment of Araucaria Rainforest, Curitiba, Paraná

Abstract

The Lauraceae family stands out in the floristic composition of Paraná’s forests, and for the Araucaria Rainforest of the state are estimated 23 species. However, the identification of sterile samples is limited, since flowers and fruits have the best conditions in determining the species. This work aimed to quantify the floristic richness of the family in a fragment of Araucaria Rainforest and to evaluate the vegetative macromorphological characteristics of their species, searching for patterns that allow their practical recognition through a dichotomous key. The individuals of the family were located in the field through periodic searches. Fertile material was collected to identify the species by comparisons with reference material, and by consulting specific bibliography. For the macromophological characterization, at least ten individuals of similar size and environment were selected or, in a smaller number, all the existing individuals. Nine species of Lauraceae were identified. This works present a dichotomous key based on vegetative morphological characters, descriptions and illustration. The differentiation through leaf characteristics proved to be more effective for the species of Aiouea and Nectandra, whereas internal bark and branches play an important role in the genus Ocotea.
