HABITS AND ATTITUDES OF DENTAL STUDENTS AT FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF GOIÁS IN RELATION TO SUGAR AND HEALTH

The aim of the present study was to investigate the dietary habits of a group of dental students in relation to sugar, and also to analyze the influence of the knowledge received during the course. Data were collected through questionnaires applied to 140 junior and senior dental students at the Federal University of Goiás. The results showed that sucrose consumption is more frequent among junior students than among senior ones (p << 0.05). Only 60% of the latter had reduced their consumption after enrolling in the course, although most of them intend to recommend the restriction of sugar to their own children (97.5%) and to their future patients (87%), aiming at better oral health and general health (77%). It was concluded that acquired knowledge does not necessarily promote changes in dietary habits among dental students, although it seems to influence their intended attitudes towards future children and patients
