Abstract in Portuguese:

O chá da Ayahuasca vem sendo utilizado milenarmente por índios da América do Sul,como instrumento espiritual e ritual, com extrema religiosidade. No século passado surgiram seitas não-indígenas, que passaram a fazer uso do chá. Essa utilização vem aumentando desde a liberação do uso da Ayahuasca para fins religiosos no Brasil. A ação do chá deve-se à presença de alcalóides nas plantas utilizadas na sua preparação: o cipó Banisteriopsis caapi e as folhas do arbusto Psycotria viridis. Os efeitos observados são: alucinações, hipertensão, taquicardia, náuseas, vômitos e diarréia. Estas ações podem causar efeitos mais sérios ao organismo e, portanto, merecem maior atenção dos profissionais da saúde, no sentido de que se promovam estudos que possam permitir a utilização religiosa do chá sem maiores danos biológicos e para a conscientização dos usuários sobre os possíveis efeitos tóxicos destas substâncias.

Abstract in English:

The Ayahuasca tea has been used for more than a thousand years by the Indians of South America, as a spiritual and ritualistic instrument, for religious purposes. Non-Indians sects have arose in the last century, and started to use the tea. This utilization is increasing since the legalization of the Ayahuasca for religious use in Brazil. The effect of the tea is caused by the presence of alkaloids in the plants used in its preparation: the Banisteriopsis caapi liana, and the leaves of Psycotria viridis shrub. The effects observed are: hallucination, hypertension, tachycardia, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. These actions may cause more serious damage to the organism, and therefore deserve more attention from the health professionals, because even for strickly religious use the tea may cause higher biological damage and therefore, the users should be made aware of the possible toxic effects of these substances.

Os autores procuraram localizar cenas com psicopatologia nos filmes brasileiros de 1994 a 2004 (período da retomada do cinema nacional). O objetivo foi desenvolver mais uma ferramenta para o ensino da psicopatologia. De uma amostra de conveniência com 45 filmes, 27 satisfizeram os critérios de seleção (60%). Predominaram cenas ilustrando transtornos de personalidade, uso e abuso de drogas, alucinações e questões ligadas à sexualidade. Há um excelente material para o ensino de psicopatologia.

Abstract in English:

Brazilian movies from 1994 to 2004 were investigated in search of psychopathology scenes that might be useful for teaching purposes. Forty five movies from the period were seen, and 27 selected mainly with personality disorders, drug abuse and dependence, hallucination scenes. A recommendation of how to use them to teach psychopatology was made.

OBJETIVO: esta revisão visa fornecer aos pediatras, neurologistas infantis e psiquiatras infantis noções atualizadas sobre a relação entre desempenho escolar e transtorno do déficit de atenção e hiperatividade (TDAH). FONTE DE DADOS: revisão abrangente não-sistemática da literatura médica sobre a relação entre desempenho escolar e TDAH. SÍNTESE DE DADOS: os dados da literatura demonstram que o TDAH, principalmente o tipo desatento está relacionado a mau desempenho escolar. CONCLUSÕES: crianças com TDAH estão sob risco de mau-desempenho escolar e devem receber cuidados especiais.

OBJECTIVE: This review aims at providing Pediatricians, Pediatric Neurologists and Psychiatrists an update on the relationship between scholar achievement and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. SOURCES: Data was obtained by a comprehensive, non-systematic review of medical literature. SUMMARY OF THE FIBDIBGS: Data obtained from literature shows that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, specially inattentive subtype, is related to underachievement. CONCLUSIONS: Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are at risk for underachievement and must receive special care.

OBJETIVO: Identificar e rever os instrumentos que explorem a motivação como fator capaz de predizer o resultado de tratamento da dependência de substâncias psicoativas e que vêm sendo utilizados na última década. MÉTODO: Revisão bibliográfica abrangente de literatura científica indexada sobre escalas que aferem o grau motivação. RESULTADO: Identificaram-se quatro instrumentos e suas propriedades psicométricas, os dois primeiros com versões validadas em português: Rhode Island Change Assessment Questionnaire (URICA), Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eargness Scale (SOCRATES), Treatment Motivation Questionnaire (TMQ), Readiness to Change Questionnaire (RCQ). CONCLUSÃO: A teoria motivacional vem sendo regularmente estudada na última década, permitindo avaliação pragmática de seus parâmetros por meio de escalas com validade e confiabilidades que variam de boa a excelente.

OBJECTIVE: To identify and review tools used in specialized services to explore aspectos of motivation as a predictive factor of treatment outcome in drug-abusing patients. METHOD: Comprehensive literature review of scales used to assess the degree of motivation. RESULT: Four scales to evaluate stages of behavioural change related to motivation were identified and described, together with their associated psychometric properties - Rhode Island Change Assessment Questionnaire (URICA), Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eargness Scale (SOCRATES), Treatment Motivation Questionnaire (TMQ), Readiness to Change Questionnaire (RCQ); The first two have Portuguese validated versions. CONCLUSION: Motivacional theory has been regularly studied in the last decade, allowing the definition of pragmatic evaluation parameters in scales with validity and reliabilities that vary from good to excellent.

A partir de um relato de caso, os autores discutem a evolução histórica do conceito de estado-misto. Objetiva-se questionar as limitações do manejo clínico destes pacientes, além de se ressaltar o papel da eletroconvulsoterapia nesses casos. Os dados relatados foram obtidos pela anamnese com o paciente e com seus familiares, além de notas em prontuários médicos.

Abstract in English:

A clinical case-report is presented to discuss the evolution of the mixed state concept and the limitations faced on its clinical management. It is emphasized the role of electroconvulsive therapy on this case. The following data were obtained by patient and family interview as well as medical notes.
