ABOUT THE COVER

Laura Castilhos' time

Teresa Poester

Fine artist. Professor, Department of Visual Arts, Instituto de Artes, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil.

Laura Castilhos, although having a considerable background as a fine artist, has dedicated herself to illustration for a few years. This work uses Indian ink - a technique that, as watercolor, bridges drawing and painting - and seems to be an illustration of time. The hourglasses and the different clock styles show us the many forms of telling time, which is not unique, but multiple. Choice of liquid ink to express this time that flows on the paper is significant. Indian ink cannot be erased, such as oil or acrylic paint. Like watercolor, Indian ink is the irreversible technique of the rhythm of life.

Time is an abstraction, a human construction, what exists is the space and changes in the matter occupying this space. Clock hands that change their position, sand grains that fall due to the force of gravity, brush strokes of the drawing that leave their mark on paper. Drawing is immediately recording the passage of time at each instant-point that flows.

Since each thing has its own time, the rain, the carrousel, the butterfly, Castilhos' time is represented in these drawings/paintings she has presented us throughout the years, full of tenderness and enchantment that make our instants lighter.
