Profession of Faith: the anti-communist rhetoric of clerical congressmen of Parliamentary Democratic Action in the 1960’s

Abstract: The Parliamentary Democratic Action (ADP) was a political group in Brazil between 1961 and 1964. With a strong anticommunist aim, the parliamentary front brought together around of 150 congressmen. Among these deputies, there were five members of Catholic Church: monsignor Alfredo de Arruda Câmara and the priests Godinho, Medeiros Neto, Nobre and Vidigal. The aim is analyzing the anticommunist rhetoric, starting from the hypothesis that these discourses strengthened the association between national reformism proposed by the political left and anti-Christian values. The main source for this paper will be in the Congress. Besides, the books which were written by these congressmen will also be analyzed as the articles in newspapers and magazines. This paper emphasizes that putting together the anticommunist rhetoric to religious principles, the ecclesiastical congressmen of ADP contributed to polarization in the 1960’s.
