Abstract:
The article seeks to explore, from the “Idalina case”, ideological, pastoral and theological aspects that impacted the nation from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, in the context of major migrations. If, on the one hand, there was a moderation of the political role of the Catholic Church, on the other, we will see that a powerful project of formation of society has been developed from catholicism. I assess how the Clergy adapted to the republican context at the same time that certain structural aspects of brazilian society were penetrated by the doctrine of the Church. I want to demonstrate, therefore, that (catholic) religion has not been reduced to the sphere of individual beliefs, but, on the contrary, it has had ample social support for its actions and vision of the world to be implemented in the public space.
