“Fight the obesity!” - religion, body and health in the Adventist print media

Abstract: This article discusses the relation between religion, health and media referring to the issue of obesity approached by the monthly magazine Vida e Saúde, from the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brazil, between 1939 and 2019. An analysis is provided about the Adventist message of health conceived in the beginning of the church in the 19th Century, and the representations of obesity in different moments of the magazine. The text investigates the alignment of the Adventist discourse with the medical-scientific discourse that pathologizes the obesity and the fat bodies and defends a naturalized notion of healthy lean body.
