Hagiography narratives and devotion to the saints: notes on the symbolic (re)-production of sanctity in the cemeteries.

Abstract:

This study aims to analyze the devotion to the saints in the cemetery, from their ritualistic and performatic-narrative potentialities. For this, I follow the composition of the hagiographic repertoire that feeds the practices of the cults rendered to four saints of the city of São José dos Campos. In addition to the ethnography of devotional rites, some hagiographic narratives about characters of the local religious imaginary are taken as research sources. The essay seeks to establish a comparison of canonical hagiographic models and local mythologies that together constitute and give life to the imaginary and daily practice of religion.

Keywords:
hagiography; devotion; catholicism.
