Former masters of space, new protectors of men: establishing a village in the Brazilian Amazon

Abstract: Based on fieldwork near Santarém (Pará), the article seeks to question the impression of impermeability between “saints” and “encantados”, as emphasized by Amazonian anthropology. Analyzing the connections between the two categories, and their division into subcategories, it suggests that their alternation weaves a narrative about the emancipation of human beings vis-à-vis previously present forces: after having negotiated with the encantados the right to inhabit a place, human beings invite the saints into their own homes, as if the alliance with these new protectors allowed them to loosen the hold of the old masters of space. In this situated story, the encantados map the geographic space experienced while saints symbolize the fabric of social relationships forged in it by human beings.
