Spirituality, New Age and religion: an ethnographic approach to categories in friction

Abstract: In this paper I propose, in the first place, to address the links and juxtapositions between the elusive categories of spirituality and "New Age" by outlining definitions and resorting to the bibliography on the subject. Secondly, I explore the tensions between the categories of spirituality and religion using an ethnographic methodology, to do so I critically resume the discourse of a series of spiritual practitioners that we could characterize as new agers who participate in Buenos Aires and its suburban alternative circuits. Finally, the final reflections of the article, based on the dialogue between fieldwork materials and certain theoretical contributions on the relations between both categories, incorporate a contextualized view that questions analytical readings excessively influenced by the emic view of the phenomenon.
