The two Evangelical faces of Brazilian Spiritism

Abstract: Behind Catholicism, the Evangelical segment is the second largest in Brazil, continuing with great growth due to Pentecostalism. With a size ten times smaller, but also expanding, the Kardecist Spiritism occupies the third position, being characterized, currently and to a great extent, by a set of perceptions, values and practices typical of Pentecostal Evangelicals. These include, on the one hand, the appreciation of the Bible, especially the New Testament, which is called in this context “Gospel Studies”, emphasizing the religious and Christian identity of Spiritism. And, on the other hand, they involve a controversial conservative political-ideological activism, something that has significant consequences. This article, resulting from field research and analysis aimed at circulating relevant news, discusses such specific similarities between Spiritism and Pentecostalism.
