By calling attention to the relevance of the researches on secularisms, in this article, I try to analyze some aspects of secular and religious activities that gained body in Rio de Janeiro. I chose to describe them through the twists and relationships they established with religious projects and practices directed toward a social issue that has been capturing the imagination of the inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro, the called "violence". The transformations of the treatment accorded to violence are seen as part of the process that involves religious and lay agents in different projects of salvation.
