Open-access Muslims in Brazil: a socioeconomic and demographic analysis from the 2010 Census

Abstract:

This article intends to analyze the socioeconomic and demographic profile of Muslims in Brazil, mainly from the data offered by the Census 2010. Firstly, it will be presented a brief introduction on the history of the Muslim presence in Brazil, from the slave traffic, to the Arab immigration and conversion of Brazilians. Then, the socioeconomic and demographic profile of Muslims will be drawn from the analysis of the following variables: country of origin, sex, age, region of residence, education, occupation, income and inbreeding. Finally, it will be presented a reflexion on the possible association of this profile with the maintenance of Islamic religiosity in the country.
