Afro-Indo-Brazilian Religions and the Public Sphere: an essay on the classification forms of their public presence

Abstract: In this work, we analyze the relations between the Afro-Indo-Brazilian religions and the public sphere, casting a close look at the forms, procedures, and relations through which these religions project themselves in the public sphere. From data of observation of the empirical reality of the action of the people of santo in the public sphere and of the analysis of the socio-anthropological literature that deals with the mentioned question, we intend to systematize its forms of public presence. The cultural form has been historically more common; however, we emphasize that the Afro-Indo-Brazilian is no longer reduced to it in its form of public insertion. We show here six forms of presence: the cultural, the judicialization, the mass culture, the resumption of the institutional structure of dependence, patrimonialization and festivals (public parties).
