É em torno dos vários sentidos possíveis do qualificativo de "popular" que gira a problemática deste artigo. A figura carismática do Pe. Cícero Romão Batista, patriarca de Juazeiro, integra de há muito o panteão da devoção popular de milhões de romeiros, mas era objeto até hoje de amplas reservas no seio da Igreja oficial. O momento parece ser de revisão destas perspectivas. A reabilitação institucional do "padrinho" pode estar em curso. Pergunta-se aqui em que medida e com que condições esta transformação da sua imagem pode confluir com certa metamorfose do que se convencionou chamar de "Igreja Popular", de modo a dotar inesperadamente de novo ícone o catolicismo brasileiro em seu conjunto.Resumo em Inglês:
The discussion presented in this paper turns around the several possible meanings of the qualifying adjective "popular". The charismatic figure of Father Cícero Romão Batista, Juazeiro's patriarch, has belonged, for many decades, to the pantheon of popular devotion of millions of pilgrims, but it is nevertheless still regarded with strong reserve inside the official Church. At the moment, it seems that this official position is being reviewed. An institutional rehabilitation of the "godfather" may well being under way. This being the case, the paper asks if, to what extent and under what conditions, can this transformation of Father Cícero's image flow together with certain metamorphosis of what has been named "Popular Church", so as to endow, even though unexpectedly, the Brazilian Catholicism with a new icon.Resumo em Português:
O objetivo deste artigo é mostrar como pessoas auto-identificadas como fãs de Gilda, colaboram, por meio de diversas práticas, no processo de consagração da cantora falecida. Respeitando a diferenciação nativa entre fã e devoto, veremos como Gilda é inscrita em uma textura diferencial do mundo-habitado que denominaremos de sagrado, a partir de performances que nao poderiam facilmente se circunscrever à esfera da religião. Ao invés de serm consideradas uma metáfora religiosa, as práticas dos fãs configuram modos diferentes de consagrar Gilda.Resumo em Inglês:
This article aims to show how people, who identify themselves as Gilda fans, through different practices, cooperate in the deceased singer consecration process. Taking into account the emic differentiation between fan and devotee, we shall see how Gilda is inscribed into a differential texture within the dwelling-world, that we can call sacred, from performances that are not easily identify as belonging to the religious sphere. Instead to considering fans' practices as religious metaphors, we consider them as different ways of Gilda consecration.Resumo em Português:
Em especial nas duas últimas décadas, visando atingir o segmento evangélico que está se expandindo rapidamente no Brasil, várias empresas, de diferentes setores, se especializaram na fabricação de "produtos evangélicos". No conjunto dessas empresas, a indústria fonográfica tem se destacado e contribuído, juntamente com as rádios do segmento, para a adoção de um estilo mais industrial na produção e na divulgação dos álbuns evangélicos. Neste artigo, a partir da trajetória de três cantores evangélicos, procuro compreender a maneira como eles se posicionam em relação às novas condições profissionais mencionadas. Além disso, pretendo indicar alguns problemas e "fissuras" que passaram a ocorrer no meio musical evangélico a partir da incorporação de uma lógica mercantil e industrial.Resumo em Inglês:
Over the two past decades, in special, several companies from different production areas, aiming to reach the evangelical segment, which is expanding rapidly in Brazil, have specialized in manufacturing evangelical products. Among these companies, the music industry has given an outstanding contribution, as well as the radios in this segment, in order to adopt a more industrial style in the production and broadcasting of the evangelical albums. Through the analysis of the career of three Gospel singers, the objective of this article is to understand the way these artists are behaving regarding the new professional conditions previously mentioned. Besides, our intention is also to point out some problems and "ruptures" occurring in the musical universe of the evangelists, since a mercantile and industrial logic was incorporated to this universe.Resumo em Português:
Algumas informações sobre as religiões afro-brasileiras (candomblé e umbanda) nos chegam por meios como a indústria fonográfica, o rádio e a televisão. Nesse cenário, a música popular brasileira (MPB) ocupa importante papel de divulgadora dessa religiosidade. Em vista disso, nesse trabalho procuro interpretar os modos pelos quais os valores dessas religiões aparecem na MPB tendo como campo empírico a produção artística de Clara Nunes (análise de letra de música, da performance em shows, clipes e apresentações em programas de TV, assim como dos símbolos escolhidos na divulgação de seu trabalho, presentes em encartes e capas de LPs).Resumo em Inglês:
Information about Afro-Brazilian religions (candomblé and umbanda) often reaches the general public through the phonographic industry, radio and television. Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) is also an important source of information about these religions. For this reason this paper attempts to interpret the ways in which the values from these religions appear on MPB, having as an empirical field the artistic production of Clara Nunes (analyzes of lyrics, performances in concerts, video clips and appearances in TV shows, as well as the symbols chosen to disseminate her work, shown in LP covers and inner-sleeves).Resumo em Português:
A singularidade de Mr. Catra, cantor e performer de funk, consiste em, ao reunir religião a um universo tradicionalmente classificado como erótico ou violento, permitir-nos articular as suas criação e visão de mundo ao ponto de vista dos jovens moradores da favela. O discurso em torno do divino, presente nas performances do artista, é aprofundado em seu dia-a-dia, e se revela como meio para a expressão de seu posicionamento político. Mas se esta é a forma privilegiada por Mr. Catra para explicitar o seu modo de entender o mundo, é a ironia, engenhosamente exercitada pelo artista, que nos possibilita ver como o funk, de modo amplo, é hábil em desestabilizar o poder através da manipulação subversiva de símbolos culturais caros à autoridade opressora.Resumo em Inglês:
The article main aim is to discuss the relation between funk and religion, through the Mr. Catra's narratives, singer and performer of this musical rhythm. His singularity resides in adding religion to a universe traditionally apprehended as erotic or violent. The artist allows us to articulate his own creation both to his worldview as to the point of view of the youngsters from the favelas slums, main producers and consumers of funk music. The discourse around the divine, present at the artist's performances, is deepen in his daily life, consisting of a medium for expressing his own political position in the world. Although the religious discourse is privileged by Mr. Catra in his will to show his way of understanding the world, the funk strength resides in another aspect, that go by party and daily life. It is the irony itself, so artfully played by the artist, that allows us to realize how the funk is ingenious at, through the laugh, destabilizing the power by a subversive manipulation of cultural symbols dear to the oppressive authority.Resumo em Português:
O rápido crescimento do "rebanho" evangélico, nas últimas décadas no Brasil, deve muito à surpreendente avidez com que grupos e indivíduos que participaram desse processo se apropriaram de tudo aquilo que, produzido para finalidades mundanas, mostrava-se evangelisticamente sedutor. Busca-se discutir neste artigo os problemas identitários que surgem nesse processo, atentando, especificamente, para a utilização da música "rock" por jovens evangélicos. Como conseguem instalar neste meio tal estilo musical, antes tão inaceitável às instituições representantes dessa modalidade de cristianismo? Como lidam identitariamente com práticas e atitudes que acompanham a cultura "rock and roll", como o sexo desregrado, consumo de drogas, rebeldia e, por vezes, alguma simpatia pelo satanismo? Que compósito identitário resulta desse inusitado encontro entre universos culturais aparentemente tão inconciliáveis?Resumo em Inglês:
The fast growth of the evangelical "flock" on the last few decades in Brazil, owes much to the surprising avidity with which groups and individuals that participated of that process appropriated of all which, produced for mundane purposes, was evangelistically seductive. The main issue to be treated in this article are the identity problems that arise on this process, attempting specifically to the use of "rock" music among evangelical youth. How can they install such musical style until now so unacceptable to the representative institutions of this Christianity modality? How do they work their identities with those practices and attitudes that come with "rock and roll" culture like messy sex, drugs, rebelliousness and, some times, a sympaty with satanism? What is the resulting identity composite of this unusual encounter between seemingly so incompatible cultural universes?Resumo em Português:
O artigo busca apresentar novos elementos para discutir a transformação do meio evangélico brasileiro. Para tanto, recorre à produção musical, especificamente à black music gospel / "música negra". Esta é baseada em musicalidades contemporâneas como, por exemplo, o hip-hop e o reggae , e efetivada por grupos independentes. Eles são formados por fiéis e não têm vínculos com empresas especializadas. Seus responsáveis apresentam bens e serviços que dialogam com as noções religiosas, principalmente com aquelas relacionadas ao contingente de fiéis afro-descendentes. Suas práticas e concepções caracterizam determinado estilo de participação e de pertencimento. Para a abordagem proposta, aplicam-se algumas noções como "negritude", "Atlântico negro" e "diáspora".Resumo em Inglês:
This article brings some new elements to the discussion of the transformation of Brazilian evangelical context. For this, the text phocus on black music gospel / "música negra". This kind of music is supported by contemporary musicalities as hip-hop and reggae musical styles and is produced by independent groups. These groups are constituted by religious individuals, who are not connected to specialized musical enterprises. They present goods and services that are in a dialogical link with religious notions, particularly those related to afrodescendants religious adepts. Their practices and conceptions define a specific kind of participation and belonging. This perspective of study has as theoretical resources notions like "blackness", "Black Atlantic" and "diaspora".Resumo em Português:
O objetivo do presente artigo é investigar a música na religião do Santo Daime em especial entre adeptos e líderes de duas igrejas ligadas à "linha do Padrinho Sebastião Mota de Melo" na cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Mais especificamente, analiso a interpretação nativa sobre a gênese dos hinos religiosos em sua relação com os pensamentos, sentimentos e subjetividade, refletida nas noções de sagrado e nas diferenciações hierárquicas dentro do grupo. The aim of the present article is to investigate the music from Santo Daime- religion especially among members and leaders from both churches that belong to "Padrinho Sebastião Mota de Melo's spiritual line" in the city of Rio de Janeiro. More specifically, I analyze the native interpretation on genesis of the religious hymns in its relation with the thoughts, feelings and subjectivity, reflected in the notion of sacred and the hierarchic differentiations of the group. The theoretical support for the analysis is anchored in the fields of ethnomusicology and anthropology of emotions.
