In this last issue of 2012 the Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Fonoaudiologia publishes, as has been doing for several years, a comprehensive panel about the research that has been carried out in Brazil. This way it complies with one of the most important roles of SBFa: bringing the scientific production close to the professional that will be able to use the information increasing the scientific basis of their clinical practice.
Body aches in call center operators and the relationship with voice use during work activities is the title of the study presented by Constancio, Moreti, Guerrieri and Behlau with 470 subjects.
Another paper by the same group was written by Padilha, Moreti, Raize, Sauda, Lourenço, Oliveira and Behlau, has the tile Talkativeness and vocal loudness in call center operators during labor and extra-labor situations and involved 299 subjects.
Voice disorders in teachers: self-report, auditory-perceptive assessment of voice and vocal fold assessment were assessed by Lima-Silva, Ferreira, Oliveira, Silva and Ghirardi in 60 teachers.
Still about voice disorders the study Correlations between classroom environmental noise and teachers' voice is presented by Guidini, Bertoncello, Zanchetta and Dragone.
The Auditory effects of combined exposure: interaction between carbon monoxide, noise, and smoking. were studied by Ferreira, Oliveira, Meira and Lacerda in 80 workers.
The Comparison of click and CE-chirp®stimuli on Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential recording was conducted by Rodrigues and Lewis.
Jacob, Bevilacqua, Molina, Queiroz, Hoshii, Lauris and Moret present the paper called Frequency modulation systems in hearing impaired children: outcome evaluation.
Wertzner, Santos and Pagan-Neves studied the Speech errors in children with speech sound disorders according to otitis media history.
The Occurrence of devoicing in phonological disorders: relationship with most affected phonemes, severity of the disorder and age was assessed by Mota, Berticelli, Costa, Wiethan and Melo.
Changes in phonological system after phonological therapy with the contrastive approach is the title of the next paper, presented by Gubiani, Brancalioni and Keske-Soares.
The Prevalence of phonological disorders in children from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil was studied by the same group, Cavalheiro, Brancalioni and Keske-Soares, in a research with 2880 children.
Phonological working memory and phonological awareness in students at the end of cycle I of elementary school is the title of the research reported by Soares, Jacinto and Cárnio.
Functional Communication Profile - Revised: objective description of children and adolescents of the autism spectrum is the title of the paper written by Santos and Fernandes, describing a research with 50 ASD children.
Oral and general motor behavior of newborns from crack and/or cocaine using mothers was assessed by Gasparin, Silveira, Garcez and Levy.
The Influence of hospital environment on aspects related to breastfeeding was assessed by Beck, Assunção, Barbosa and Gomes.
Wertzner and Pagan-Neves present a case report about the Effectiveness of complementary tests in monitoring therapeutic intervention in Speech Sound Disorders.
Another case report is described by Melo, Yamaguti, Moret and Bevilacqua and refers to Auditory and language abilities in children with cochlear implants who live in bilingual homes: a case report.
Pires, Sassi, Mangilli, Limongi and Andrade present a review paper about Food in liquid consistency and deglutition: a critical review of the literature.
The other review article is from Oliveira, Domingues, Juste, Andrade and Moretti-Ferreira, regarding Familial persistent developmental stuttering: genetic perspectives.
Lima e Cruz-Santos are the authors of the special paper regarding the Acquisition of gestures in prelinguistic communication: a theoretical approach.
The New Reflexions paper was written by Madazio and Moreti and refer to a paper about the resolution of vocal fold polyps treatment.
Molini-Avejonas reviewed a paper about early identification of language delay.
Finally, the following ABSTRACT are presented: Temporal resolution in sensorineural hearing loss and brain injury by Gallo; Analysis of the impact noise on the hearing of military personnel of special operations: a proposal for prevention by Heupa; Youtube and deafness: analysis of discourses produced by deaf people in virtual places by Festa; Students' profile of 3rdto 5thgrade of elementary school in reading comprehension: elaboration of an assessment instrument by Cunha; and Spelling performance of elementary school students: developing and implementing an instrument of intervention by Sampaio.
Actually this is the last issue of Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Fonoaudiologia by the responsability of SBFa. Starting in 2013 the publisher will be the Academia Brasileira de Audiologia - ABA (see the invited editorial about it).
The changes proceeded in the SBFa periodicals aim to allow their development and, mostly, to improve their indexation. During the last two years SBFa has published two journals: the Revista da SBFa and the Jornal da SBFa. Although it was an overwhelming work, it would be possible to continue to do it. But wouldn't be possible to continue doing it and improve the indexation and the impact of the publications.
Last June we received the evaluation result of the submission to indexation on ISI and it clearly indicated that the word "Fonoaudiologia" created some confusion.
... "We have examined the Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Fonoaudiologia and find that we cannot accept it for coverage in Thomson Reuters products at this time. Thomson Reuters strives to provide comprehensive but not all-inclusive coverage of the world's best journals. Audiology is a very competitive field of study. We have sufficient coverage of audiology."
Even after a reconsideration request explaining the specific features of "Fonoaudiologia", the answer continued to imply that the Revista was being compared with publications in Audiology
"...Our evaluation process of Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Fonoaudiologia, considers many factors, including the extent of our current coverage of the discipline and the journal citation record-how often a journal is cited, which journals cite it, and are cited by it. Our database captures both the indexed and non-indexed items in the bibliographies of Web of Science journals. Within that database, your journal has a low estimated ranking in the journal category of Audiology and related subjects."
Considering this negative and the need to continue to work towards the indexation improvement we though after specialized support, participated in courses and seminar about editorial processes supported by Fapesp and SciELO. The suggestion that we concentrated efforts in just one journal was immediate and unanimous and the natural choice for this project was the Jornal da SBFa because it already is indexed in Medline and Scopus, therefore facilitating its inclusion in the PubMed Central and allowing more international visibility. Readers will have more information about these changes on the Jornal da SBFa in the December issue.
There was still the decision about the future of Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Fonoaudiologia. ABA's generous decision means more than a solution to a problem, it means the unification of Brazilian Fonoaudiologia. Of course there changes are natural in these transfer processes, but the proposal that the Revista will keep it generalistic character, including the whole Fonoaudiologia, guaranteed the continuity of the alternatives for publication and visibility to the Brazilian scientific production.
Personally, after seven years as scientific editor of Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Fonoaudiologia, I am certain this project will continue to be seriously and competently conducted. In 2013 we will face the same challenges with different strategies.
I am very thankful for the opportunity and the privilege of doing this work and learning with it.
The end of the year is also a good moment to thank all the people that contributed to the Revista, as readers, authors, reviewers, technicians, Juliana Gandara, Erica Ferraz and Mara Behlau, for the opportunities, companionship and support.
May the end of the year be full of joy and 2013 one more year full of success and happiness.
