The auhors, after reviewing the data on schistosmiasis mansoni in Goiás State, where the estimate number of cases is 2000, point out that the prevalence of the disease in the area is due to the demographic composition of the population, 23% of the inhabitants coming frorn endemic areas in Brazil. Though favourable ecologic conditions to the development of the intermediate hosi are recognizabie, the authors believe that the disease may be placed. on the second grade line as a public health problem, due to the low number of autochtonous cases and to the slow growth of the foci of Biomphalaria straminea, the snail found in Meia-Ponte-river. Howewer they suggest the need to increasing the number of investigations in oráer to evaluate the real importance of schistosomiasis in the State and its expansive tendency.
