The use of arm-circumference measurement in the determination of the nutritional status of preschool children

Use and limitation of a classification of the nutritional status of preschool children based exclusively on arm circumference were studied. Gomez' classification was used as the basis for the determination of nutritional status. Trigger levels of arm circumference were determined for three age groups (2, 3 to 5 and 6 years of age) regardless of sex. Specificity and sensibility of the classification ranged from 75% to 80%. The method could be simplified by using tapes or cords previously marked with the trigger level appropriated for each age group. Potential applications of the arm circumference were discussed and it was concluded that possibly the best use of the arm circumference would be in the screening of the nutritional status of whole population of children.
