Water potential estimated from the liquid-vapour equilibrium in different soil, plant and atmosphere situations is treated thermodynamically, with the objective of presenting a more rigorous formulation of the concepts and clarifying points treated, in general, in a more superficial way. Although being a classical subject found in most related texts, authors understand that this short communication contributes in clarifying basic points related to the behavior of water in the soil-plant-atmosphere system, mainly for those using soil and plant psychrometers.
