MAGIC AND THE SACRED IN THE WORK OF MICHAEL TAUSSIG: A PROPOSAL FOR A READING PATH

Abstract

This study addresses the notions of magic and the sacred in the work of anthropologist Michael Taussig. To do so, I discuss how the author mobilized these terms in the scope of six texts of his authorship published from the 1980s to 2010s. In the first section, I show Taussig’s great familiarity with the debate on the sacred by the Collége de Sociologie. In the second section, I describe the relevance transgression has in the author’s discussions about the sacred. In the last section, I follow Taussig’s arguments on the possible articulations between the sacred and the State. Finally, in the final remarks, I try to deduce some more general comments from the reading path this study proposed on the ways in which Michael Taussig uses the notions of magic and the sacred.
