Resumo As entrevistas com Roberto DaMatta e Yvonne Maggie iluminam a fecunda interlocução da antropologia brasileira com a obra de Victor Turner. A relevância dos rituais na vida social e a inclusão das sociedades ocidentais na investigação antropológica foram centrais para Roberto DaMatta cuja obra renovou as ciências sociais brasileiras. O conceito de drama social, por sua vez, inspirou Yvonne Maggie, cujo trabalho abriu novos caminhos na antropologia urbana e da religião. Nossos entrevistados falam de uma antropologia vivida tanto no campo das pesquisas como no convívio intelectual feito de muitas leituras e estudos compartilhados com professores e colegas. Falam dos insights que impulsionaram ricos processos de pesquisa; trazem aspectos pouco conhecidos de um momento marcante da antropologia feita no Brasil.

Abstract The interviews of Roberto DaMatta and Yvonne Maggie enlighten the fruitful dialogue established by Brazilian anthropologists with Victor Turner's work. Rituals' prominent role in social processes and the inclusion of Western societies in anthropological research deeply influenced DaMatta's own work, which renewed Brazilian social sciences as a whole. The concept of social drama, in turn, inspired Maggie's research, which broke new grounds in the anthropology of religion and urban anthropology. The interviews tell us about a lively anthropology based not only in field research, but also in many intelectual interchanges shared with teachers and colleagues. They tell us about the insights that drove rich research processes as well as little-known but remarkable aspects of a highly innovative moment of anthropology in Brazil.

Resumo A partir dos escritos de Victor Turner sobre antropologia da experiência e da performance, revisitamos o seu ensaio sobre Hidalgo e a Revolução Mexicana de Independência. Nas margens interiores dessa antropologia encontramos algumas das afinidades entre Turner e Walter Benjamin. Três delas se evidenciam: 1) ao realizarem uma arqueologia da experiência, Turner encontra a experiência do liminar, e Benjamin a grande tradição narrativa; 2) ao discutirem transformações que acompanham o capitalismo industrial, Turner fala de um sparagmos, ou desmembramento das formas de ação simbólica; Benjamin da ruína da experiência e do estilhaçamento da tradição; e 3) na busca por formas de reconstituir uma experiência, as atenções de Turner se dirigem às formas liminóides de ação simbólica, e as de Benjamin às novas formas narrativas. Emergem questões. No fundo de cada uma delas, lampeja a imagem de Tonantzin. E a força de alguns dos elementos mais surpreendentes do pensamento de Turner.

Abstract In this exercise, Victor Turner's essay on Hidalgo and the Mexican Revolution of Independence is revisited in light of his writings on the anthropology of experience and performance. On the internal margins of this anthropology, affinities between Turner and Walter Benjamin are found, three of which are particularly evident: 1) while carrying out an archaeology of experience, Turner discovers liminal experience, and Benjamin, the great narrative tradition; 2) in their discussions of transformations which accompany industrial capitalism, Turner speaks of the sparagmos, or dismemberment of forms of symbolic action; and Benjamin, of the ruins of experience and the shattering of tradition; and 3) in search of ways to reconstitute meaningful experience, Turner's attentions are directed toward liminoid forms of symbolic action; and Benjamin's, toward new narrative forms. As the image of Tonantzin flashes up, questions emerge, bringing to the surface some of the more surprising elements of Turner's thought.

Resumo Este estudo da obra de Victor Turner toma como ponto de partida seu profundo interesse pelos símbolos e por sua ação na experiência social. Ritual é o tema que abarca esse interesse, desdobrando-se de diversos modos nas sucessivas fases de sua trajetória intelectual. Nesta incursão, Chihamba, um ritual de cura Ndembu, e o personagem mítico Kavula - que emergem já em seu primeiro livro Schism and continuity in an African society (1996 [1957]) - são tomados como fio condutor para a apreensão dos conceitos de drama social, de símbolo ritual e de performance, três fulcros das contribuições centrais de Victor Turner à teoria antropológica.

Abstract This study of Victor Turner's work takes as a starting point his deep interest in symbols and its effect on social experience. Ritual is the theme that embraces Turner's interest, unfolding in many ways throughout the successive phases of his intellectual career. Chihamba, a healing Ndembu ritual, and the mythical character Kavula - that already appear in his first book Schism and continuity in an African society (1996 [1957]) - are used as guidelines for the apprehension of the concepts of social drama, ritual symbol, and performance, three clusters of Victor Turner's main contributions to anthropological theory.

Resumo O artigo retoma questões já tratadas pelo autor, principalmente em Le nouvel esprit du capitalisme (1999), escrito em colaboração com Eve Chiapello, para destacar a importância de refletir sobre o papel e os limites da crítica. Reconhecendo, embora, que a postura crítica não desapareceu, o autor questiona o poder da crítica, diante da chamada "dominação gestionária" de nossos dias. Nesta, diferentemente do que ocorre na dominação pelo terror ou pela ideologia, a legitimidade dada pela ciência, as estratégias de management e as novas ferramentas de gestão, garantem às formas de governança - pública ou privada - dispositivos que permitem conter a crítica e manter inalteradas as principais assimetrias sociais existentes.

Abstract The article deals with issues already addressed by the author and Eve Chiapello in Le nouvel esprit du capitalisme (1999), to highlight the importance of reflecting on the role and limits of criticism. While recognizing that the critical attitude has not disappeared, the author questions the power of criticism, before the so-called "managerial domination" of our days. In this case, unlike what happens with the domination by terror or by ideology, the legitimacy given by science and new management strategies and tools, support forms of governance - public or private - that prevent criticism and maintain unchanged the major existing social asymmetries.

Resumo O trabalho analisa o "humanismo secular" de Edward Said, que busca ir além do provincianismo e de contraposições hierarquizadas que caracterizariam o humanismo tradicional. Refletindo aspectos da abordagem pós-colonialista, questionam-se identidades fixas e excludentes, destacando as minorias e a fluidez de identidades opostas a representações hegemônicas. Tendo em conta virtudes cognitivas de um novo humanismo, Said faz referências à condição de exílio, exemplares em manifestar a capacidade fecunda de se criar novos tipos de conexões e percepções sociais. O artigo busca mostrar virtudes e limites do conhecimento cosmopolita proposto por Said, destacando alguns impasses de sua teoria em relação a aspectos da tradição humanista.

Abstract The paper analyzes the "secular humanism" of Edward Said, who tries to go beyond provincialism and hierarchical oppositions that characterize the traditional humanism. Reflecting aspects of post-colonialists approaches, Said questions notions of fixed or exclusionary identities and emphasizes the minorities and the fluidity of identities opposed to hegemonic representations. Taking into account cognitive vantages of a new humanism, Said makes references to the condition of exile that would be exemplary to express the ability to create new types of social connections and insights. The article points out virtues and limits of the cosmopolitan knowledge proposed by Said and it highlights some impasses of his theory in relation to aspects of the humanist tradition.

Resumo Proponho discutir a inclinação de Siegfried Kracauer e Walter Benjamin para objetos de investigação marginais ou detalhes e articular essa espécie de procedimento epistemológico como resultado de uma adequação ao presente histórico e também como um posicionamento em relação às discussões sociológicas contemporâneas aos autores. A correspondência entre ambos e as resenhas que escreveram um sobre a obra do outro são o principal material para a discussão. Embora não sistematicamente, menciono também algumas obras dos autores para indicar como sua análise social privilegia objetos cotidianos e/ou fragmentos da vida social e algumas implicações desse procedimento.

Abstract I propose to discuss Siegfried Kracauer's and Walter Benjamin's penchant to deal with marginal objects of investigation or details and to articulate this kind of epistemological procedure as a result of an adaptation to the historical present as well as a positioning concerning sociological discussions contemporary to the authors. The letters between both of them and the reviews that each one wrote on the works of the other are the main material for the discussion. Although not systematically, I mention also some works of the authors to indicate how their social analyze privilege everyday objects and/or fragments of the social life and some implications of this procedure.

Resumo O artigo trata da recepção de Viagem pitoresca e histórica ao Brasil de Jean-Baptiste Debret, obra rejeitada no Brasil por uma comissão do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro (IHGB) em 1840, pelo caráter crítico com que retrata a escravidão. O pintor francês, malvisto durante o período da Restauração da monarquia, vem para o Brasil a pedido da Corte portuguesa. A condição paradoxal de Debret, que viveu intensamente as mudanças revolucionárias ocorridas na França e posteriormente fica a serviço da monarquia portuguesa, terá impacto sobre a produção e recepção desta obra. Debret cria no Brasil uma obra bifrontal, de dupla face estilística, temática e ideológica.

Abstract The paper addresses Jean-Baptiste Debret's Viagem pitoresca e histórica ao Brasil, which was rejected by a Brazilian Historic and Geographic Institute's commission in 1840 on the basis of its critical depiction of slavery. The French painter, with a bad reputation during the Restoration, came to Brazil at the request of the Portuguese Court. The paradoxical condition of Debret, who has intensely experienced the revolutionary changes in France and later has been engaged by the Portuguese Monarchy, will impact his production and the reception of that work. Debret has created in Brazil a dual work, with two stylistic, thematic, and ideological faces.

Resumo Tem sido destacado como os estudos de Roberto Schwarz a respeito de Machado de Assis assumem um ponto de vista dialético, que chama a atenção para as contradições presentes na formação social brasileira. Tal tipo de explicação provocou e continua a provocar intensa controvérsia. Sustento que essa interpretação do crítico literário foi inspirada por certos trabalhos realizados pelas ciências sociais brasileiras. Indo além da visão de Schwarz a respeito do seu país, procuro, no artigo, enfatizar como certas tensões alimentam sua própria análise do romancista oitocentista. Mais importante, num momento em que parece perder-se de vista boa parte das contradições das quais são feitas as sociedades, inclusive a brasileira, defendo que uma análise como essa continua a oferecer vantagens em relação a outras explicações que lidam com ideias.

Abstract It has been pointed out how the studies of Roberto Schwarz about Machado de Assis have a dialectical point of view, which emphasizes contradictions present in Brazilian society. This analysis has stimulated controversy. I defend that such a literary criticism was inspired by some works of Brazilian social sciences. Beyond the critic´s interpretation of his country, the article aims to show how tensions are present in his own interpretation of the Nineteenth century novelist. More important, I defend that this type of explanation regarding ideas has advantages, what is particularly the case in a moment where the contradictions, which make up societies, are no longer being perceived.

Resumo Desde a década de 1980, uma geração de artistas e intelectuais tem contestado a oposição entre "alta" e "baixa" culturas e se valido de seu capital midiático para produzir programas de TV em que desponta uma nova estrutura de sentimentos anti-intelectualista, apegada ao valor da "diversidade", refratária ao nacionalismo, ao partidarismo e a uma visão tradicionalista de "povo". Esta geração tem no Núcleo Guel Arraes (NGA), da Rede Globo, um espaço institucional e simbólico muito importante. Para entender esta estrutura de sentimentos e apontar de que maneira ela ecoa e intensifica uma mudança no campo cultural brasileiro, este artigo está dividido em dois itens que tratam, respectivamente da estrutura de sentimentos dos artistas e intelectuais abrigados no NGA e da conversão desta estrutura de sentimentos em um projeto estético-político de visibilidade midiática da periferia, sobretudo a partir do programa dominical Esquenta, da Rede Globo.

Abstract Since the 1980s, a generation of artists and intellectuals has contested the opposition between "high" and "low" culture and has used its media capital to produce TV programs that expresses its new structure of feelings, more attached to the value of cultural diversity, against nationalism and a traditional vision of "people". This generation has found an important institutional and symbolic place in the Núcleo Guel Arraes (NGA), of Globo TV. In order to understand this structure of feelings and to point how it echoes and intensifies a cultural change in the Brazilian cultural field, this article is divided in two items that present the structure of feelings embraced by artists and intellectuals sheltered in the NGA and the affirmative visibility of the "periphery", especially in the Globo's television program named Esquenta.

Resumo Este artigo aborda o pensamento de Afonso Arinos de Melo Franco utilizando seus relatos de viagens para destacar um aspecto pouco explorado pela bibliografia, que é o seu diálogo com o Modernismo e a sua relação com a cultura nacional. As viagens serão as que Arinos realizou no início da década de 1920 à Europa e aquela feita em 1936 a Ouro Preto. A primeira é fortemente marcada pela expectativa do pai de que completasse sua educação através de uma experiência capaz de lhe proporcionar maior intimidade com a cultura clássica. Já em Ouro Preto, em vez de reencontrar uma marca singular das tradições brasileiras, o que se percebe no relato de Afonso Arinos é a ideia de intercâmbio da cultura clássica com as tradições nacionais, apontando para uma situação na qual o local e o universal parecem se articular de uma maneira particularmente feliz.

Abstract The article discusses the ideas of Afonso Arinos de Melo Franco using his travel reports to highlight a not very much explored aspect in the bibliography, which is its dialogue with modernism and its relationship with the national culture. The trips will be the ones that Arinos held at the beginning of 1920s in Europe and one made in 1936 to Ouro Preto. The first one is strongly influenced by the expectation of his father to complete his education through to an experience which would be able to provide him a greater intimacy with the classical culture. However, in Ouro Preto, instead of rediscovering a unique brand of Brazilian traditions, what is perceived in the narrative of Afonso Arinos is the idea of an exchange between classical culture and national traditions, pointing to a situation in which the local and the universal seem to be articulated in a particularly happy way.

Resumo O artigo analisa como uma atividade produtiva, o comércio de livros, atua como elo unificador de um grupo. Centrado na figura do livreiro como o protagonista deste mercado, o texto explora a dupla matriz do objeto-livro, cultural e material, que acaba por definir uma estrutura dúbia, onde coexistem o promotor da cultura e o negociante de mercadorias. No plano microssociológico, busca-se entender a tensão, presente na formação profissional, entre o saber-fazer aprendido na lida diária (em uma prática que reconstrói o modelo mestre-aprendiz), frente ao aprendizado academicista. No plano macrossociológico, as mudanças na forma de venda de mercadorias em geral e a reformulação da prática de leitura impõem a criação de estratégias de adaptação frente ao novo mundo informacional. O estudo deste caso permite explorar as sociabilidades do grupo e o processo de construção de uma visão de mundo compartilhada fora dos espaços oficiais de formação profissional.

Abstract The article examines how a productive activity - the book market - acts as a unifying bond for a certain group. Centered on the figure of the book seller as the protagonist of this market, the paper explores the double matrix of the book-object, cultural and material, which ultimately sets a dubious structure within which both the promoter of culture and the dealer coexist. On the micro-sociological level, we seek to understand the tension at the vocational education between the know-how learned in their daily works (in a routine that reconstructs the master-apprentice model), and the academic learning. On the macro-sociological level, the changes in the way goods in general are sold and the reshaping of the reading habits impose the introduction of strategies of adaptation towards the new world of information. The study of this case allows us to explore the sociability of the group and the process of building a shared vision of the world outside the official spaces of vocational education.

Resumo O artigo apresenta um foco que, de forma geral, permanece quase imperceptível à sociedade e ao Sistema de Justiça Criminal como um todo: as mulheres de presos. O tema desse artigo gira em torno dos produtos trazidos pelas mulheres de presos nos dias de visita às unidades prisionais da cidade do Rio de Janeiro - as "sucatas" -, tratando especificamente dos alimentos levados por elas. A análise se pauta, sobretudo, na perspectiva da antropologia e da sociologia das emoções, de modo que dentre os diversos sentimentos possíveis em relações domésticas e familiares, as contrapartidas das companheiras dos presos se tornam no contexto prisional o amor, a fidelidade e a compaixão. Todos esses sentimentos se encontram materializados nas coisas repassadas aos detentos durante a visita. Nesse sentido, as "sucatas" levadas pela mulher ao interno tornam-se a concretização do afeto. Entre outras coisas, tais bens permeiam a relação homem e mulher estabelecida no cárcere.

Abstract The article addresses an object that in general remains almost imperceptible to society and the Criminal Justice System as a whole: prisoners' women. It focuses the products, specifically the food, brought to prisons by the prisoners' women in visiting days in the city of Rio de Janeiro. These are called "scraps" ("sucatas"). The analysis is mainly based on the perspective of anthropology and sociology of emotions. Accordingly, it is argued that among many possible feelings of domestic and familial relationships, the counterpart of the prisoners' partners becomes in the prison context love, fidelity and compassion. In that sense, as materialized feelings, the things that the women take to the interns, the so called "sucatas", can be seen as the concretion of affection, and pervade the relationship between man and woman established in prison.

Resumo O presente artigo consiste numa brevíssima apresentação para a tradução de um texto do pensador alemão Georg Simmel. Ao longo de toda esta apresentação, assumo a premissa de que esse é um texto-chave para uma compreensão adequada da produção sociológica de Simmel. Meu objetivo aqui é situar - ainda que apenas de forma algo aproximada - esse texto em particular na trajetória intelectual de seu autor. Para tal, indico algumas relações cronológicas e temáticas entre esse e alguns dos outros textos que ele escreveu. Sugiro, a pretexto de conclusão, que o texto deve ser lido como um ensaio maduro sobre teoria social.

Abstract This article comprises a very brief introduction to a Portuguese translation of a text by the German thinker Georg Simmel. For this introduction, I adopt the assumption that this is a key text to a due comprehension of Simmel's sociological accomplishments. I aim here to indicate - but only in rather a sketchy manner - the placement of such text along the lines of Simmel's intellectual trajectory. In order to do so, I point to some chronological and thematic relations between this text and some of the others he wrote. I propose, as a sort of conclusion, that the text should be read as a mature essay on social theory.

Resumo Este texto foi originalmente publicado em 1908, em alemão, como parte da Soziologie - considerada a obra sociológica maior de Simmel. Ofereço aqui uma tradução deste. No texto propriamente dito, o autor tem em vista descrever e investigar três condições a priori na base das quais a sociedade empírica como a conhecemos seria possível. O próprio autor apresenta a discussão como um esboço teórico. Este é guiado por uma série de comparações positivas e negativas entre a natureza segundo Kant e a sociedade, e aborda (de maneira não sistemática, mas bastante pioneira, considerando o estado da arte de seu tempo) diversas questões que se tornariam centrais para a teoria social que estava por vir.

Abstract This text was originally published in 1908, in German, within Simmel's Soziologie - which is considered his major sociological work. Here I offer a translation of it to Portuguese. In the text itself, the author endeavors to depict and investigate three a priori conditions upon which empirical society, as we know it, would be possible. Simmel himself framed the discussion as a theoretical draft. This draft is guided by a chain of positive and negative comparisons between nature according to Kant and society, and tackles (in a non-systematic, but fairly pioneer fashion, considering the epoch's state of the art) many questions that would turn out to be key ones to the social theory yet to come.
