Assim, por exemplo, esses especialistas revisitam a capacidade de interpelação contemporânea de conceitos como autocracia burguesa, ordem social competitiva e periferia entre outros, bem como discutem os múltiplos relacionamentos entre sociologia e antropologia, história e teoria, centro e periferia, universidade e movimentos sociais, passado e presente na obra do cientista social paulista.

Abstract In this interview, Elide Rugai Bastos, Gabriel Cohn and Mariza Peirano address some of the main aspects of the academic and intellectual trajectory of Florestan Fernandes, particularly the current relevance of his work, its key theoretical findings and its political and ethical dimensions. The three specialists review, for example, the capacity of concepts like bourgeois autocracy, competitive social order and periphery to interrogate contemporary realities. They also discuss the multiple relationships between sociology and anthropology, history and theory, centre and periphery, universities and social movements, past and present in the social scientist’s work.

Resumo O artigo propõe repensar a obra de Florestan Fernandes no entrecruzamento dos textos sobre a “formação”, de certas referências analíticas oriundas da sociologia da cultura e dos estudos sobre pensamento social brasileiro. Nessa perspectiva, realça as dimensões culturais da produção sociológica do autor, a partir da sua análise sobre a constituição dos valores modernos em sociedades periféricas como a brasileira. Finalmente, revê a sua contribuição no crivo da crise do Brasil contemporâneo, buscando elucidar questões intrínsecas ao nosso tempo.

Abstract The article proposes to rethink the work of Florestan Fernandes at the intersection of the texts on ‘national formation,’ certain analytic references originating from the sociology of culture, and studies of Brazilian social thought. From this perspective, it emphasizes the cultural dimensions of the author’s sociological output, based on his analysis of the constitution of modern values in peripheral societies like Brazil’s. Finally it revisits his contribution through the filter of the crisis of contemporary Brazil, seeking to elucidate questions intrinsic to our own era.

Resumo O artigo examina a obra e a trajetória de Florestan Fernandes sob ângulo até hoje pouco explorado: sua circulação internacional. A análise é baseada em três eixos: (1) identificação das especificidades da circulação internacional de Florestan Fernandes à luz da trajetória modal dos sociólogos de sua geração que lideraram a formação da disciplina na América Latina; (2) o mapeamento da circulação de sua produção intelectual fora do Brasil, tomando como referência seus artigos publicados em revistas estrangeiras, sua participação em eventos científicos internacionais e as resenhas de suas obras feitas no exterior; (3) o delineamento de algumas hipóteses explicativas, que incidem na necessidade de distinguir conceitualmente os termos “internacionalização” e “circulação internacional”, a fim de explicar o caso de Florestan Fernandes. Ao final, oferecemos algumas indicações sobre os possíveis efeitos da circulação internacional de Fernandes em sua teorização sociológica da América Latina.

Abstract This article analyses the international circulation of the work of sociologist Florestan Fernandes − an aspect that has been somewhat overlooked. The paper focuses on three aspects of this problem: (1) it highlights the singularities of the international circulation of Fernandes’s work vis-à-vis the modal trajectory of the scholars who led the formation of the discipline in Latin America; (2) it analyses his publications in foreign journals, his participation in international scientific events, and the reviews of his works made outside Brazil, data from which is used to map the international circulation of his work; (3) in order to explain the case of Florestan Fernandes, it offers some explanatory hypotheses focused on the conceptual distinction between the terms ‘internationalization’ and ‘international circulation.’ Finally, the article makes some suggestions concerning the impact of the international circulation of Fernandes’s work on his own sociological theorization of the peculiarities of Latin America.

Resumo Procuro discutir a aproximação entre uma geração de sociólogos paulistanos, pesquisadores das relações raciais no Brasil, entre os anos 1950 e 1970, com ativistas e intelectuais negros de São Paulo. O foco se dá nas aproximações entre Florestan Fernandes e a Associação Cultural do Negro, permitindo retroceder e avançar no tempo, vislumbrando-se outras figuras igualmente importantes como Roger Bastide, Virgínia Leone Bicudo, Octavio Ianni, Eduardo de Oliveira e Oliveira. A hipótese é de que há uma aproximação de projetos políticos acerca da mudança social pautada pela luta antirracista, que se modificará em função do golpe de Estado civil-militar de 1964.

Abstract In this article, I discuss the relations established between a generation of sociologists from São Paulo, researchers on the subject of race relations in Brazil between the 1950s and 1970s, with black activists and black intellectuals in the same city. The focus is on the connection between Florestan Fernandes and the Associação Cultural do Negro, which allows me to shift back and forward in time, highlighting other important figures, such as Roger Bastide, Virgínia Leone Bicudo, Octavio Ianni, Eduardo de Oliveira e Oliveira, among others. My hypothesis is close relations were formed around the political projects for social change rooted in the antiracist struggle that made this alliance possible, until the situation changed with the 1964 civil-military coup in Brazil.

Resumo Este artigo enfoca as contribuições teóricas da chamada virada ontológica ao debate antropológico. Para tanto situa inicialmente o interesse acadêmico despertado pelas ontologias ameríndias no contexto da crescente preocupação com consequências políticas do antropoceno. Empreende em seguida uma arqueologia do conceito de perspectivismo, central nos desdobramentos contemporâneos dessa vertente de estudos. Argumenta então em favor de um retorno à estética e à poética, entendidas como lugares privilegiados em que diferentes ontologias se manifestam. Tais instâncias emergem como decisivas para a percepção do caráter relacional das ontologias ameríndias. O argumento é sustentado por curta apresentação da estéticahuni kuin(kaxinawa) revelada nohuni meka, canto da ayahuasca.

Abstract In this article I explore the ontological turn in anthropological theory through three interconnected approaches. First, I situate the academic success of Amerindian ontologies in the context of recent debates on the urgency of addressing the political consequences of the anthropocene. Secondly, I undertake an archaeology of the concept of perspectivism as a central stage of the ontological turn, showing how the sub-discipline of Amerindian ethnology has always had a vocation for Copernican turnings, from the time of Montaigne until today. In conclusion, I argue for a return to aesthetics and poetics as the quintessential domains for exploring how different ontologies can teach us to look at the world differently. To understand the multiple versions of Amerindian relational ontologies we have to be able to perceive the relational character of the aesthetics they reveal. The argument is sustained by a short presentation of Huni Kuin (Cashinahua) aesthetics as revealed in huni meka, ayahuasca song.

Resumo Ao longo da sua formação como pesquisadores e docentes, os acadêmicos que trabalham com relações raciais assimilam uma história canônica da produção desse campo. Com algumas variações, essa produção é habitualmente organizada em torno de uma narrativa que se inicia com a recepção do racismo científico no Brasil, passa em seguida para a formulação da abordagem culturalista e da tese da “democracia racial” e segue para as rupturas que finalmente conduziram ao reconhecimento e investigação de padrões de racismo e discriminação no Brasil. Este artigo apresenta uma síntese dessa história para em seguida interrogá-la sob diferentes ângulos e perspectivas. Para tal, apoia-se em intérpretes da sociologia e historiografia das relações raciais visando apontar como determinadas reorientações teóricas e metodológicas no campo e mudanças sociais de âmbito nacional e internacional estão conectadas a diferentes interrogações lançadas sobre o fenômeno do racismo no Brasil.

Abstract Throughout their training as researchers and teachers, academics working with race relations assimilate a canonical history of the production in the field. With some variations, this production is usually organized around a narrative that begins with the reception of scientific racism in Brazil, then goes on to formulate the culturalist approach and the thesis of ‘racial democracy’ and, finally, mentions the ruptures that led to the recognition and investigation of patterns of racism and discrimination in Brazil. This article presents a synthesis of this history and then interrogates it from different angles and perspectives. To achieve this objective, it turns to interpreters of the sociology and historiography of race relations to reveal how certain theoretical and methodological reorientations in the field, along with national and international social changes, are connected to the different questions raised with regard to the phenomenon of racism in Brazil.

Resumo Tendo como tema os movimentos sociais contemporâneos e a produção de sujeitos políticos, a pesquisa de que resulta este artigo analisa o trânsito entre ativismos e o múltiplo pertencimento político a fim de entender a chamada “hifenização” dos feminismos. De cunho etnográfico, a investigação tem como objeto empírico uma rede informal de ativistas que se reconhecem como feministas, têm entre 20 e 30 anos de idade, estão na universidade e provêm de camadas médias urbanas. Elas se apropriam de referências diversas, como o vegetarianismo, o autonomismo, o punk, o direito à cidade, e o anarquismo, tecendo interlocuções e articulações com outras pautas de luta além do gênero. O artigo observa como esses trânsitos são encarnados e tomam corpo no ativismo, por meio de uma análise documental voltada para a produção iconográfica de fanzines, cartazes e documentos de campo.

Abstract This research approaches the contemporary social movements and the emergence of new political subjects. Specifically, it explores the multiple political belongings of activists and their circulation in order to understand the so-called ‘hyphenation’ of feminisms. Based in major Brazilian cities, this research was undertaken among an informal network of young activists who self-identify as feminists. These are women in their twenties and thirties, from middle-class backgrounds, who have gone to college. They deploy diverse references like vegetarianism/veganism, punk, autonomism and anarchism, making connections with diverse political agendas that extend beyond gender. Adopting an ethnographic approach, the article looks to analyse how these relations are embodied in their iconography of the network’s fanzines, flyers and books.

Resumo O artigo reflete sobre as relações e práticas de cuidado que dão sustento ao bem-estar de pessoas com deficiência intelectual que moram num bairro de classe popular da cidade de Porto Alegre (Brasil) em um contexto de políticas públicas incipientes para essa população. Para tanto, realizamos descrição etnográfica da experiência de três mulheres residentes responsáveis pelos cuidados de seus parentes adultos acometidos daquilo que entendem como ‘problemas de cabeça’ a fim de ilustrar as especificidades de gênero, geração, classe e etnia que permeiam suas práticas. Consideramos que levar em conta as dinâmicas variáveis que subjazem as situações de cuidado assim como a interação dos diversos recursos - familiares, vicinais, estatais - disponíveis para enfrentar essas situações é um caminho para forjar políticas eficazes no contexto das complexas conjunturas atuais.

Abstract In this article, we reflect on the care practices and relationships that contribute to the well-being of people with intellectual disabilities, living in a poor neighbourhood of Porto Alegre (Brazil), in a context of incipient public policies for this population. Through the ethnographic description of the experience of three women from who are responsible for adult relatives with what they call ‘head troubles’, we aim to illustrate the gender, generation, class and ethnicity peculiarities of their trajectories. We consider that taking stock of the various dynamics at play in situations of care, as well as the interaction of the family, neighbourhood, and public resources available to deal with such challenges, is a fundamental step for forging efficient policies adjusted to the complexities of the contemporary context.

Resumo Neste artigo proponho uma análise do concerto de inauguração da Sala São Paulo, em 9 de julho de 1999, evento que entendo ser o principal marco da chamada reestruturação da Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (Osesp), iniciada após a morte de Eleazar de Carvalho, em setembro de 1996. A escolha da data da inauguração (9 de julho) e do nome do concert hall (Sala São Paulo) são alguns dos muitos índices que revelam o sentido de um projeto de orgulho paulista, em que os conflitos e contradições da experiência social seriam borrados pela a dimensão supostamente universal e atemporal da música clássica. Por meio de um esforço de reconstrução de tipo etnográfico do evento de inauguração, discuto de que maneira vozes dissonantes se fizeram ouvir, revelando as contradições do projeto da orquestra.

Abstract In this article I discuss the inauguration of the Sala São Paulo concert hall, the headquarters of OSESP, on July 9th 1999, the landmark event in the ‘restructuring’ of the orchestra, a process that started after the death of maestro Eleazar de Carvalho. The choice of the event’s date (July 9th) and of the name of the concert hall (Sala São Paulo) indicate the effort made to create an idea of ‘Paulista pride,’ in which the conflicts and contradictions of social experience were to be erased by the timeless and universal properties of classical music. Through an ethnographical reconstruction of the inauguration concert, I discuss how dissonant voices have found their way to be heard, revealing the contradictions of the orchestra’s project.

Resumo O artigo analisa o conteúdo programático do movimento antropofágico argumentando que ele encerra uma proposta de emancipação do homem, frequentemente expressa por meio de imagens utópicas. De acordo com Oswald de Andrade, a experiência de vida do indígena brasileiro representou uma utopia fundada em uma cosmovisão centrada em ideais de liberdade e igualdade, experiência que foi, porém, irremediavelmente destruída pela empresa colonizatória portuguesa, sendo impossível e mesmo inoportuno restaurá-la nos dias presentes. Entretanto, pretende-se mostrar como, para a antropofagia oswaldiana, o impulso primário de agressividade, que inspira as ações do nativo, deve ser recuperado, em um contexto histórico de crise da civilização ocidental, favorável à emergência de uma nova era utópica.

Abstract The article analyses the programmatic content of the anthropophagic movement, arguing that it contains a proposal for the emancipation of man, frequently expressed through utopian imagery. For Oswald de Andrade, the life experience of the Brazilian Indian represented a utopia founded on a cosmovision centred on the ideals of freedom and equality, an experience that was, however, irremediably destroyed by Portuguese colonization, making it impossible and even inopportune to restore it in the present. However, the aim is to show how, for Oswaldian anthropophagy, the primary impulse of aggression, which inspires the actions of the native, should be recuperated in a historical context of crisis in western civilization, favouring the emergence of a new utopian era.

Resumo Neste texto publicado em 1977 e escrito por sugestão do próprio Florestan Fernandes, mas pouco conhecido pela ampla fortuna crítica da obra do sociólogo paulista e praticamente inacessível hoje, Silviano Santiago apresenta leitura original de A revolução burguesa no Brasil. Apreendendo essa obra por prisma ainda hoje inovador e provocador, acentua a recusa de Florestan pela postura eurocêntrica ao rejeitar o raciocínio por conceitos tomados das ciências sociais para adotar o princípio operativo da diferença como força mobilizadora de novo discurso crítico da periferia na periferia. O texto é precedido de uma introdução em que, relendo a resenha 40 anos depois, o autor narra ao leitor contemporâneo seu encontro com Florestan nos Estados Unidos e o início de uma amizade.

Abstract In this text published in 1977 and written at the suggestion of Florestan Fernandes himself, yet little known to the ample critical literature on the work of the São Paulo sociologist and practically inaccessible today, Silviano Santiago presents an original reading of A revolução burguesa no Brasil. Approaching the work through a prism that remains just as innovative and provocative today, it foregrounds Florestan’s refusal to adopt a Eurocentric posture by rejecting the reasoning through concepts taken from the social sciences in order, instead, to adopt the operative principle of difference as a mobilizing force of a new critical discourse on the periphery in the periphery. The text is preceded by an introduction in which, rereading the review 40 years later, the author tells the contemporary reader of his encounter with Florestan in the United States and the beginning of a friendship.
