Resumo Além de uma introdução geral à sociologia de Jeffrey Alexander, em que comento alguns dos principais eixos de sua produção sociológica ao longo do tempo (teoria social e metateoria, neofuncionalismo, sociologia cultural e sociologia política da sociedade civil), apresento aqui uma entrevista inédita feita com o autor em outubro de 2014 no Rio de Janeiro. Nessa ocasião, conversamos sobre certos aspectos de sua trajetória pessoal e intelectual, destacando especialmente continuidades e descontinuidades de seu percurso teórico, desde as revisões dos clássicos da sociologia até suas formulações mais recentes sobre a esfera civil, passando pelo lugar do legado parsoniano em sua obra.

Abstract Along with a general introduction to Jeffrey Alexander’s sociology, in which I comment on some of the main lines taken by his sociological output over the years (social theory and metatheory, neofunctionalism, cultural sociology and the political sociology of civil society), I present here an unpublished interview with the author, conducted in October 2014 in Rio de Janeiro. During this interview, we talked about various aspects of his personal and intellectual trajectory, highlighting especially continuities and discontinuities over his theoretical journey, from the revisions of the classics of sociology to his more recent formulations on the civil sphere, passing through the place of the Parsonian legacy in his work.

Resumo Identificando uma tendência para um afastamento crescente das ciências sociais praticadas nos Estados Unidos de uma orientação mais humanística desde a década de 1950, o autor pretende recuperar uma tradição intelectual das ciências sociais que coloca os significados culturais e as dimensões subjetivas das ações sociais no centro da análise. Portanto, contrário à “grande divisão” entre ciências sociais e humanidades, Alexander propõe, através de seu programa forte de uma sociologia cultural, uma concepção de sociologia que considere os fatos sociais não como “coisas”, mas como “textos”, isto é, que analise como os significados culturais se enraízam socialmente e estruturam a vida social.

Abstract Identifying a shift away from a more humanistic approach in the sociology and political science practiced in the United States since the 1950s, Jeffrey Alexander seeks to recuperate an intellectual tradition of the social sciences that places the cultural meanings and subjective dimensions of social actions at the very centre of analysis, while simultaneously considering the structure nature of social life. Opposing the ‘great divide’ between social sciences and humanities, therefore, Alexander proposes, via his strong program of cultural sociology, a conception of sociology that considers social facts not as ‘things’ but as ‘texts,’ analysing how cultural meanings are socially rooted and structure social life.

Resumo Este artigo analisa criticamente a sociologia cultural desenvolvida por Jeffrey C. Alexander, concentrando-se em sua visão sobre a teatralidade da vida social. Argumenta que se, de um lado, a perspectiva de Alexander de fato se articula com uma avaliação substantiva da dimensão performativa da vida social e política - o que vai ao encontro do programa forte em sociologia cultural -, fortalecendo uma virada reflexiva na produção cultural em geral, de outro, sua visão sobre o teatro e a política continua de certo modo limitada às tentativas de identificar as estruturas simbólicas que lhe são constitutivas. Ao mobilizar uma hermenêutica estrutural para definir o núcleo analítico de sua metodologia, Alexander perde de vista uma hermenêutica mais dialética capaz de lidar com as importantes transformações que afetam essas estruturas simbólicas, expressas tanto pelo teatro de vanguarda quanto pelos meios de comunicação associados à política democrática de massa.

Abstract This article provides a critical examination of the cultural sociology developed by Jeffrey C. Alexander, focusing on his view of the theatricality of social life. The argument is that, while Alexander’s perspective do engage in a highly significant valuation of the performative dimension of social and political life that matches his strong program in cultural sociology to add a reflexive turn to cultural production in general, his views on theatre and politics remain somehow limited in their efforts at reaching the symbolic structures that are constitutive of these domains. In using a structural hermeneutics to define the analytical core of his methodology, Alexander loses sight of a more dialectical hermeneutics able to tackle the significant transformations affecting those symbolic structures, and exhibited by both avant-garde theatre and media infused mass democratic politics.

Resumo A obra de Émile Durkheim é a pedra angular na arquitetônica da sociologia cultural de Jeffrey Alexander, a ponto de ser virtualmente impossível discernir com precisão em qual ponto termina o movimento de interpretação e começa a construção de uma nova teoria. Neste artigo, mostro os pontos nodais da leitura de Alexander da obra de Durkheim, discutindo como determinados conceitos e argumentos foram cuidadosamente pinçados para estabelecer as bases do programa forte em sociologia cultural, inclusive da “virada performativa”. Ao fazê-lo, saliento virtudes e fragilidades dessa leitura, mostrando existir uma importante expressão de seu “espírito”, mesmo quando não há fidelidade à “letra”. Em suma, Alexander opera, em relação a Durkheim, uma tradução capaz de atualizar suas potencialidades, purgando-o de suas premissas positivistas e tornando-o mais apto à compreensão do mundo social entendido enquanto teia de significados socialmente criados e partilhados.

Abstract Émile Durkheim`s work forms the cornerstone of Alexander’s cultural sociology, to the point where it becomes virtually impossible to discern precisely where the process of reinterpretation stops and the construction of a new theory begins. In this article I aim to show the cardinal points of Alexander`s reading of Durkheim’s work, discussing how certain concepts and arguments are carefully selected in order to establish the bases of the strong program in cultural sociology, including in its ‘performative turn.’ In so doing, I highlight both strong and weak points in his reading of Durkheim’s texts, showing that there is an important expression of its ‘spirit’ even when he is not faithful to its ‘letter.’ In short, Alexander’s approach to Durkheim, a translation capable of actualizing its potentialities, purges his work of positivistic premises and adapts his theory to a comprehension of the social world, understood as a mesh of socially created and shared meanings.

Resumo Analisaremos encontros e confrontos na esfera pública em discursos religiosos e seculares sobre a violência. Sugerimos que o tratamento da violência nesses discursos possui como eixo a distinção entre o humano e o não humano, bem como as pequenas nuanças dispostas ocasionalmente em suas fronteiras. Essas se configuram de forma instável e variada tanto em suas versões seculares quanto religiosas, incluindo também os sentidos atribuídos à dor e ao sofrimento. As ideias religiosas de dor e de sacrifício como caminhos de redenção já conduziram tanto à recusa quanto a um consentimento implícito das práticas da tortura, do homicídio, do crime e da violência. O repertório de problematizações e de intervenções micropolíticas em torno da violência nos encaminhou para a importância das relações de gênero nesse campo, com destaque para as éticas que hoje estruturam certas condutas, tanto religiosas quanto seculares.

Abstract The article analyses the encounters and confrontations in the public sphere in religious and secular discourses on violence. I suggest that the treatment of violence in these discourses pivots on the distinction between the human and the non-human, as well as the small nuances located occasionally on their boundaries. These are configured in unstable and varied forms in both their secular and religious versions, including too the meanings attributed to pain and suffering. The religious ideas of pain and sacrifice as paths to redemption already lead to both a rejection of and an implicit consent to the practices of torture, homicide, crime and violence. The repertoire of problematizations and micropolitical interventions surrounding violence points to the importance of gender relations in this field, highlighting the ethics that today structure certain conducts, religious and secular alike.

Resumo A flexibilização do trabalho atinge também o campo da música erudita. Muitos músicos atuam por projetos e têm múltiplos empregos, lidando com a incerteza econômica e a falta de garantias profissionais. Este artigo analisa os músicos da Orquestra de Câmara Theatro São Pedro, localizada em Porto Alegre e mantida somente com recursos privados, mostrando que eles sobrevivem exclusivamente de atividades ligadas ao campo da música, por meio dos cachês que recebem pelos concertos e pela atuação em outros serviços musicais. Mediante pesquisa etnográfica que incluiu assistência a ensaios e concertos, bem como entrevistas, foi possível mostrar como a flexibilização do trabalho afeta os artistas que se inserem nesse segmento do mercado de trabalho musical.

Abstract Labour flexibilization also affects the field of classical music. Many musicians work on a project-basis and have multiple jobs, having to cope with economic uncertainty and the lack of professional guarantees. This article analyses the case of the musicians from the São Pedro Theatre Chamber Orchestra, located in Porto Alegre and run solely with private funding, showing that they survive exclusively on activities linked to the field of music through the fees received for playing the concerts and for their work providing other musical services. Through ethnographic research that included attending rehearsals and concerts, as well as interviews, it was possible to show how labour flexibilization affects the artists situated in this sector of the musical labour market.

Resumo O artigo apresenta uma revisão da obra de Francis Chateauraynaud, contextualizando o autor no âmbito da sociologia pragmática francesa e discutindo suas principais contribuições para tal corrente. Chateauraynaud desponta como um dos principais nomes desse movimento surgido na França em meados da década de 1980, participando ativamente de sua renovação a partir da década seguinte. No artigo enfatiza-se o aspecto teórico da sua obra, em especial a complexificação da reflexão pragmática sobre a produção da crítica, o que o autor faz, principalmente, a partir de uma síntese dos elementos perceptivo e dialógico da ação social. Dessa forma, ele acompanha o desdobramento de sua sociologia da percepção em uma pragmática das transformações.

Abstract This article presents a review of the work of Francis Chateauraynaud, situating the author within the context of French pragmatic sociology and discussing his main contributions to the current. Chateauraynaud stands out as one of the main names of this movement that emerged in mid-1980s France, participating actively in its renewal from the following decade. Emphasis is given in the article to the theoretical dimension of his work, especially the complexification of the pragmatic reflection on the production of critique, which the author primarily does through a synthesis of the perceptual and dialogical elements of social action. In the process, the article accompanies the evolution of his sociology of perception into a pragmatics of transformations.

Resumo Neste trabalho discuto a imbricada relação entre o dinheiro e as apostas no turfe produzindo uma economia específica de trocas entre seus jogadores. Proponho discutir o que está efetivamente sendo jogado. A primeira imagem que vem à cabeça é a de que, no jogo, apostam-se bens materiais, mais especificamente dinheiro. Nas casas de jogo, entretanto, essa associação se dá a partir da relação de uma economia do crédito circulante com base em prestígios individuais que estrutura e molda as relações instituídas. Uma economia relacionada com uma atividade que não deve ser entendida como um fim em si mesmo, mas que possui em sua dinâmica trocas embebidas de aspecto moral. O prestígio do jogador vai ser fundamental para que ele possa estabelecer vínculos entre ele e a casa de apostas e seus companheiros de jogo.

Abstract In this work I discuss the entangled relationship between money and betting in horse racing, which produces a specific economy of exchanges among gamblers. I propose to discuss what is effectively being gambled. The first idea that comes to mind is that gamblers bet material goods, more specifically money. In the gambling houses, however, this association takes place through the relationship of an economy of circulating credit, based on individual prestige, that structures and shapes instituted relations. An economy related to an activity that should not be understood as an end to itself, but whose dynamic contains exchanges imbued with a moral aspect. The gambler's prestige is essential to being able to establish bonds between himself and the gambling house and his gambling companions.

Resumo O artigo tem como objetivo analisar, no cancioneiro sertanejo produzido entre 1964 e 1985, imagens objetivas de esperança produzidas por seus compositores a partir das políticas agrárias executadas durante a ditadura militar. Ao compor essas imagens, o fizeram pela perspectiva dos liberais conservadores de direita, mas também pela maioria de seus ouvintes, os trabalhadores nas periferias ou nas roças. É a esperança que, nessas canções, convergiu diferentes concepções de reforma agrária em um impulso para a superação de um presente insatisfatório. Esse princípio ambíguo, capaz de provocar ilusões e firmar-se como o mais sério benefício para homens e mulheres, foi mobilizado no cancioneiro sertanejo para atribuir sentido a suas narrativas musicais sobre as transformações decorrentes da política agrária executada nesse período.

Abstract The article's objective is to analyse, in the Sertanejo song repertoire produced between 1964 and 1985, objective images of hope produced by their composers in response to the agrarian policies implemented during the military dictatorship. In composing these images, they did so from the perspective of right-wing liberal conservatives, but also from that of the vast majority of their listeners, workers on the urban peripheries and in rural areas. It is hope that, in these songs, combined different conceptions of agrarian reform in a drive towards overcoming a dissatisfactory present. This ambiguous principle, capable of both provoking illusions and becoming realized as a serious benefit to men and women, it was mobilized in the Sertanejo song repertoire to give meaning to its musical narratives on the transformations arising from the agrarian policy pursued during this period.

Resumo O objetivo do artigo é discutir a hipótese de que o modernismo dos anos 1920 pode ser pensado sociologicamente como um tipo de específico de socialização. Com o intuito de trabalhar essa questão, mobiliza-se a correspondência ainda pouco explorada de Pedro Nava com Mário de Andrade, assim como uma parcela das cartas deste último com Carlos Drummond de Andrade trocadas naquela década. Além das questões mais exploradas pela crítica, como a importância de temas como o "abrasileiramento da linguagem", procura-se demonstrar como essas peças narrativas implicam simultaneamente a conscientização de um projeto coletivo e a modelagem de um tipo específico de "personalidade" capaz de enfrentar os desafios impostos pelas exigências de um processo profundo de renovação que então se propunha.

Abstract The article discusses the hypothesis that 1920s modernism can be sociologically conceived as a specific kind of socialization. Exploring this idea, I turn to the still little explored correspondence between Pedro Nava and Mário de Andrade, as well as the portion of letters exchanged by the latter with Carlos Drummond de Andrade during the same decade. Beyond the questions more often explored by the critical literature, such as the importance of themes like the 'Brazilianization of language,' I aim to show how these narrative elements simultaneously imply awareness of a collective project and the shaping of a specific kind of 'personality' capable of confronting the challenges imposed by the demands of the deep process of renewal proposed during this period.

Resumo O trabalho de Alexander tem produzido um impacto decisivo na sociologia cultural e no desenvolvimento da teoria social de um modo geral. Sua produção em sociologia cultural oferece uma ampla e útil caixa de ferramentas para os sociólogos interessados em pesquisas empíricas sobre as relações entre os significados e a sociedade. Sua teoria da esfera civil fornece um modelo para os pesquisadores interessados em estudar os processos pelos quais a própria sociedade se torna um objeto de interpretação e de avaliação. Todas essas contribuições intelectuais têm se apoiado em um estilo generoso de prática teórica, que combina solidariedade, ritual e um compromisso com uma "hermenêutica da fé" (nos termos de Ricœur).

Abstract Alexander's work has had a major impact on cultural sociology and the development of sociological theory more generally. His work in cultural sociology provides a large and useful toolkit for sociologists interested in doing empirical work on meaning and society. His theory of the civil sphere provides a template for scholars interested in studying the processes by which society itself become an object of interpretation and evaluation. All of these intellectual contributions have been supported by a generous style of theoretical practice, which combines solidarity, ritual, and a commitment to a "hermeneutics of faith".

Resumo O programa forte em sociologia cultural ocupa um lugar específico na sociologia estadunidense contemporânea. Em um momento em que as teorias de médio alcance predominam, o programa forte, em certos aspectos, segue um modelo mais antigo de teorização por meio do desenvolvimento de um autoconsciente esforço teórico programático. Este artigo articula essa característica do programa forte com as suas relações com tradições teóricas anteriores que inspiram suas ambições (a despeito de suas consideráveis diferenças dessas tradições). Outro aspecto do programa forte que exerce uma importante influência é a sua identificação institucional com o Center for Cultural Sociology da Yale University. O artigo identifica nos encontros semanais do "culture workshop" promovidos nesse centro um nexo que lhe permite ao mesmo tempo perseguir o seu programa teórico específico e permanecer fortemente conectado aos desenvolvimentos mais gerais da sociologia cultural estadunidense.

Abstract The strong program in cultural sociology is distinctive in contemporary U.S. sociology. At a time when middle-range theory dominates, the strong program in some respects follow an older model of theorizing through the development of a self-consciously programmatic theoretical endeavor. The article traces this quality of the strong program to its relationship to older theoretical traditions that inspire its ambitions (though it differs from these in important ways). Another aspect of the strong program that exerts an important influence is its institutional identification with the Yale Center for Cultural Sociology. The article focuses on the Center's weekly culture workshop as a nexus that allows for it to both pursue a distinctive theoretical program that nonetheless remains closely connected to developments in U.S. cultural sociology more generally.

Resumo Este artigo analisa o papel de Jeffrey Alexander no passado, no presente e no futuro do programa forte em sociologia cultural. O argumento central é que Alexander está se tornando um intelectual icônico, mas esse processo ainda se encontra inconcluso. A partir de observações de primeira mão reunidas através de meu pertencimento de longa data ao "grupo de Alexander", analiso a expansão da autoridade social e da influência intelectual do autor por meio da criação, da institucionalização e da globalização do programa forte - e a descrição de suas performances intelectuais carismáticas traz novos insights sobre o processo de iconização. Na conclusão, identifico alguns dos desafios que devem ser superados para um maior desenvolvimento teórico do programa forte e as condições necessárias para que o processo de iconização de Alexander se complete.

Abstract This paper considers Jeffrey Alexander's role in the past, present and future of the strong program in cultural sociology. The central argument is that Alexander is becoming an iconic intellectual, but that the process is not yet complete. Drawing on first-hand observations gathered through my long-term affiliation with the "Alexander group", I trace the development of Alexander's social authority and intellectual influence through the establishment, institutionalization and globalization of the strong program. Descriptions of his charismatic intellectual performances provide further insight into iconization. The conclusion identifies some of the challenges that must be overcome for further theoretical development of the strong program, and the conditions that must be met for Alexander's iconization to reach completion.

Resumo Este artigo investiga o conceito de "poder civil" no livro The Civil Sphere, de Jeffrey Alexander. Com isso, torna-se possível interpretar a obra situando-a entre as diferentes teorias e definições de poder presentes nos trabalhos de Max Weber e de Hannah Arendt. Lido assim, The Civil Sphere não se torna apenas um argumento durkheimiano sobre a solidariedade, mas também um argumento sobre os modos mais consequentes pelos quais agir em conjunto ou não agir em conjunto constituem um espaço de variação no grau em que o poder e a violência podem ser controlados, uma vez que eles são dominados na construção da soberania democrática.

Abstract This article traces the concept of 'civil power' in Jeffrey Alexander's book The Civil Sphere. Doing so leads to an interpretation of the work as operating in the space between the different theories and definitions of power in the work of Max Weber and Hannah Arendt. Read in this way, The Civil Sphere becomes not only a Durkheimian argument about solidarity, but also an argument about the consequential ways in which acting together and not acting together constitute a space of variation in the degree to which power and violence can reined in, in so far as they are reigned out in the making of democratic sovereignty.

Resumo Na ocasião em que as ciências sociais completam 80 anos de existência na UFRJ, este artigo comemora dois projetos de pesquisa pioneiros, realçando tanto sua repercussão nos debates sobre os temas do capital e do trabalho quanto seus efeitos na construção institucional das ciências sociais no Rio de Janeiro. A primeira dessas pesquisas, realizada no Instituto de Ciências Sociais na década de 1960, sob a coordenação de Maurício Vinhas de Queiroz, identificou pela primeira vez os grupos econômicos brasileiros e estrangeiros instalados no país; a segunda, sob a coordenação de Alice Rangel de Paiva Abreu e Elina Gonçalves da Fonte Pessanha, com início no final de 1980, revelou características do protagonismo político dos trabalhadores e da participação do Estado em grandes empresas além de abordar questões de gênero e juventude.

Abstract At the time the social sciences course at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro completes 80 years, this article commemorates two groundbreaking research projects highlighting their repercussion on debates on work and capital, as well as their influence on the institutionalization of the social sciences in Rio de Janeiro. The first one, conducted at the former Institute of Social Sciences in the 1960s under the supervision of Maurício Vinhas de Queiroz, identified for the first time the Brazilian and foreign economic groups established in the country. The second project, directed by Alice Rangel de Paiva Abreu and Elina Gonçalves da Fonte Pessanha, started in the late 1980s with a broad agenda: to disclose the political protagonism of workers, and State intervention ranging into enterprises, as well as to address gender and youth-related questions.
