EDITORIAL
To discuss health as a development of social processes is the major challenge faced by the editors of the journal Saúde e Sociedade, this is the reason why we considered so important to organize this special edition on the world of work.
Acknowledging that the work environment affects health and well being of individuals and, furthermore, realizing that the context of society in which work is inserted is a risk factor for several diseases are part of the assumptions guiding this special edition of the journal. However, this is not about ignoring the relevance of studies approaching the physiological responses of workers to specific risk factors in their work environment. On the contrary, to think about work and its consequences enables to look beyond the group of individuals, considered as part and expression of the characteristics of society.
Willing to share this view with the editors from the journal, several researchers accepted to submit their articles to the present edition, of which I had the honor to be the invited editor.
After peer review and countless discussion among editors, because articles were high-quality, we have selected those that better fulfilled the scope of the journal. Among the articles published we may observe two lines of investigation: in the first, authors assessed results in workers' health in certain professional categories; in the second, authors discussed broader issues, such as work management and governmental actions regarding work in general. It is worth mentioning that in the first line of investigation there are studies on different kinds of careers, such as textile workers, truck drivers, bank employees, military personnel, and metallurgy and sugar-cane workers, among others. Likewise, issues on the second line of investigation vary greatly, with discussions on social exclusion, technological development and work-related violence.
Finally, I would like to invite readers to reflect upon workers' health and the context of contemporary society reading the special editorial, written by Professor Ricardo Antunes, who has written important works such as A Rebeldia no Trabalho (Rebelliousness in the Workplace).
