The presence of women in patenting activities in Brazil (1996-2017)

ABSTRACT

The involvement of women in the patenting activity in Brazil is examined through the analysis of the patent registrations granted and applications for deposits from residents, published in the ‘Industrial Property Journal’ (RPI) of the National Institute of Industrial Property (Inpi) during the period 1996-2017. The study contributes to a better understanding of the presence of women in the production of technological knowledge in the country, revealing the growth of their participation, despite the predominance of males in the Brazilian patent system. By examining this little-studied dimension of women’s role as scientists, the aim is to present new elements about the processes they confer, shaping gender inequalities in Brazilian science.
