This study aims to analyze the knowledge of Municipal Health Counselors about their role in overseeing the public budget. It is a descriptive exploratory study, conducted with six counselors in the city of Jequié-BA. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews and analyzed using content analysis technique of Bardin (2009). From the analysis four thematic categories emerged where it was found that the counselor demonstrated awareness of their role to oversee and monitor the financial resources of the SUS (Sistema Único de Saúde) - Unified Health System - and to foster effective social control in the supervision of the public budget.
